Raid Compatability

I was recently forced into purchasing a VTRAK D5800 since the E5800 became EOL.  I had a raid drive set which was created in the E5800.  When I installed the drives into the D5800, the pool was recognized, but "Missing", and the size was 11PB, and controller affinity set to  "0".  I was unable to import the existing RAID.

My question is 1) Should I have  been able to import and use the RAID? 2) If I create a Raid on the D5800, can I move the drives to the E5800?

Thanks,

Ed

Hi Edward,

The E5800 id FC storage and the D5800 can be a NAS or a DAS, the storage is configured differently as a result,

E5800: arrays and LUNs
D5800: pools and nasshares/volumes

As a result the D5800 cannot use an E5800 RAID set and an E5800 cannot use a D5800 RAID set.

Within the FC product line backwards compatibility was assured at least one version. An Ex30 could use an Ex10 RAID set and an Ex50 could use an Ex30 RAID set. But the D5800 is a different product family.

Sorry.

Thanks for the information.  Is there a documented process to move raid drive sets between D5800 Raids?  Assuming same dual controller/FC/... setup?  I have a need to move data between 2 isolated Systems and have D5800s with expansion chasis at both sites.

Hi Edward,

Thanks for the information.  Is there a documented process to move raid drive sets between D5800 Raids?

The simplest way to do this is to power down the source D5800, transport the disks and insert them into the powered off destination D5800.

In normal conditions never remove a drive from a powered on RAID system, always power the system off before removing a drive.

The exception is if there is a failed drive, the status light will be red and a failed drive can safely be removed with the unit powrered on.
