Promise utility suggested I upgrade my firmware from 5.04.0000.18 to 5.04.0000.64 on my R4. I've been on the "Please wait. Firmware update in progress..." screen for upwards of 30 minutes and all four drives are flashing activity non stop. Is this normal? If not, what do I do now?

firmware flashing should take no more then 1 minute or so.
If the process hangs for whatever reason you will have no other option then to shut down the device and power it back on.
This is ofcourse not recommended since it is never a good idea to force stop a firmware update in progress however in this case you seem to have no other option.
If the device is still able to boot up after power cycle, check if the firmware was updated successfully in the utility.
