hi

i am totaly new to promise products and trying to learn things. one things to learn to make a connection between my promise unit (vtrak e610f) and windows 10 via rj11-to-db9 cable. i ordered the cable.

now i came this article in the KB:

https://kb.promise.com/thread/how-to-set-up-a-serial-connection-to-a-vtrak-system-and-collect-the-logs-using-the-command-line-interface/

here they talk about terminal emulation application.

question: which application can i use for this on windows 10, 64bit. i am not that much into serial connections and terminal emulation.

so far searched on internet and found ZOC7 terminal, cmder, conemu.

any recommendation for which application to choose, becaus of possibility to set serial connection configuration?

Hi Eric,

There are 2 common freeware programs that can be used for this...

1. Teraterm

2. Putty

While I have not tested them on Windows 10, I'm pretty sure they will work if you download the latest version.

My review: Putty works fine but is more difficult to configure with a serial connection. Teraterm is simpler to use and just works. Both can also be used for ssh, which you can use to connect to the E610f's CLI once you configure the managent port IP from the serial connection. But once you have the mangement IP configured, WebPAM is probaby the preferred way to manage.

is WebPAm downloadable program? or it is running inside the RAID-controller? only thing about webpam i know it is used with a browser

and CLI? is this also downloadable software? or running inside the controller?

my unit is: vtrak e610f with firmware 10.05.2270.04. i hread somewhere here that this unit is designed for use with Apple, but i dont have Apple. i have windows 10 64bit with FC HBA card (atto fc42es).

can i use this unit with windows? if i can configure via serial rj11-db9 cable and webpam?

i am sorry for my questions. but FC and Promise are for me totally new erea to lear things for

Hi Erik,

WebPAM is the management GUI built-in to the Ex610f. For example, if you had assigned the management port an IP of 192.168.2.2, then you would access WebPAM by opening your browser (Windows Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc...) and entering http://192.168.2.2 into the URL bar. The CLI is accessed by ssh'ing into the same IP with putty or teraterm.

Have you looked at the product manual for the E610f? Maybe this would be a good place to start.

The Quick Start guide might also be helpful.

The Apple version should work fine with Windows, but I would suggest upgrading the firmware to the latest apple release, which is 10.06.2270.00. You can download this from the legacy products page. I can't post a direct link, but select Vtrak > Vtrak Ex10 Series > E610f from the Legacy downloads in the support page.

yet another question....my unit has 2 raid controllers. in the manual says that i need 2 fc hba cards with 2 connections to the vtrak unit. question: is this requierment? what would happen if connect my unit on left-side raid-controller (with 2 raid modules) with 1 fc cable to 1 fc hba card? should that work? or really need 2 fc cables with 2 fc hba?

i have sata hdd and aamux in my unit

Hi Erik,

yet another question....my unit has 2 raid controllers. in the manual says that i need 2 fc hba cards with 2 connections to the vtrak unit. question: is this requierment?

This is needed only for High Availability, it gives redundancy and allows for multipathing.

what would happen if connect my unit on left-side raid-controller (with 2 raid modules) with 1 fc cable to 1 fc hba card? should that work?

That will work just fine. But you should probably disable LUNaffinity if you want to do this, or you can simply affine both LUNs to controller 1. If needed when you get management connected I can give you the CLI commands.
