Volume on SmartStor DS4600 suddenly not visible, RAID array OK.

Can anyone help please?  We have a legacy DS4600 attached to Windows7 PC via USB on which a new RAID and Volume was created back in May 2016 using SmartNAVI for Windows.  (The device itself had previously been used with Mac OS).  It was working fine a couple of weeks ago, then suddenly a few days back the 'connected drive' was no longer visible on the PC.  (Although it does show as a 'ejectable' in 'Safely remove hardware and eject media').

Accessing the device via SmartNAVI, it can be seen and managed.  However, when accessing the Volume List it indicates 'no volume now, please create a volume first'.  The RAID shows everything fine and the Event Log was showing both the RAID & Volume created on 09.05.2016, the date it was originally set up, but there were no other events on the log.  As I said, it has been working absolutely fine in the meantime.

I have since tried resetting, and also pulling individual discs so as to force the system to recreate the array, which it actually does (confirmed on the updated event log). I have also tried updating the firmware on the device, but still no volume is visible.  I have even tried connecting it to another PC with newer SmartNAVI software installed, but exactly the same results and still 'no volume' present.

The device itself was being used to archive files for users who had left the establishment so the data itself was not actually being backed up.  If anyone has any ideas, or can advise how we can retrieve the archived data it would be very much appreciated.

Hi Julian,

Thank you for choosing Promise Technology, Inc. for your storage needs.

I have checked the attached file and could see that the volume was created on 09.05.2016 and there is no other event logs. I could also see that the volume was created when you tried to unplug and replug the drives. You have also mentioned that you have tried resetting the unit still it show no volume created. Could you please mark and remove all the drives from the unit, insert a different spare drive and try to create a RAID0 volume to see if you are able to create the volume with the new drive. Kindly try this step and let us know the results for further invesitgation.

Hi Pradeep,

Thank you for your response.

Creating a new RAID 0 volume on spare disks was successful. The new volume is visible (as can be seen by the screen grabs below - I actually added a couple of spare 1TB drives for a fuller test).

I can also see the volume as a connected drive on my PC as would be expected.  However, I cannot actually recall seeing the Music, Video and WebAlbum folders on the original connected drive previously, but I have to say my memory is not too brilliant these days....  Is it possibly that a volume created in an older version of SmartNAVI, by upgrading to a newer version this could have made the volume created in an older version no longer visible in the newer version?

Rgds

Julian
