Hello

My name is Mads, and I have no prior experience in setting up a server. I have bought a second-hand VessRAID 1830i, since I have a lot of harddrives and litterally ran out of SATA connections on my motherboard. The second-hand server was very cheap compared to other normal 4-bay NAS you can buy in stores. These might be easier to setup for a first time user, but they where too expensive.

So I have this VessRAID 1830i, and I have absolutely no idea of how to connect to it. I was instructed to use iSCSI-iniatior on windows, but I have not had any succes with the IP's I was given by the guy I bought it from. I do not know myself, how I check if the IP's are correct.

Could someone maybe give some advice or point me in the right direction, that would really be helpful.

Hello Mads,

First, please note that the Vess 1830i is long past End Of Life.

You should probably start with the product manual.

The Vess has a management interface, the product manual will show you which network ports to use for management. Then you can login using Safari, Firefox or whatever browser you have and see how the unit is configured. The default management IP is 10.0.0.1, this is usually changed. I would try the IP the seller gave you first. The default login/password is "administrator" and "password".

You will need to access the Vess management interface in order to configure the storage and data portals.

The basic steps are...

1. Create an array and LUN on your disks. There is a wizard that makes it easy from the GUI. Please note that the newer larger disks have not been tested and may or may not work. 

2. Create a portal on one of the 4 data ports. The portal will get it's IP either from DHCP or you'll have to assign a static IP manually.

3. The portal IP must be on the same network as your computer's network port, but not the same IP.

4. Lastly start your system's iSCSI Initiator and give it the IP address of the portal you created. Then use disk management to put a filesystem on the iSCSI LUN.

Lastly, you might want to check the firmware on your Vess and update it to the latest version if it's downrev.

Hello again

Thank you for the quick answer. This is a good start to get it working.

Looking through the manual I noticed the LCD panel add-on. This add-on would help a lot, but since the product is way past End of Life, I understand that this is not possible to get.

What I wondered was therefore if you had the specs for the connections to the LCD panel and four buttons. I am studying Electronic Engineering, and can therefore probably build the panel myself, I just need to know the connections to the 2x4 PIN plug on the server, and the baudrate for the panel and so on.

Is there a possibility for getting these specs?
