Upgrading from P2 R6 to P2 R8, just add drives?

Hi Everyone,

I am currently running a Pegasus 2 R6 with 6 10TB drives, but am running out of space. I recently purchased a Pegasus 2 R8. Can I just use the prepare to move function on the R6, and then move them to the R8 and add 2 more 10TB drives? I'm guessing I will need to do something to add the 2 drives to the raid assembly of the 6 from the r6? Thank you in advance!

Hi Joe,

You don't need to use the transport option, just make sure all power is off in both Pegasus units, unplugging them is best, then more the drives from the R6 to the R8. Please maintain the same drive sequence. When the R8 powers up, your volume should mount.

You can add 2 more disks, use the 'migrate' function to add them to the array and expand the LD. This will take some time, maybe days.

If you are using Windows, the Disk Management console will easily expand the NTFS volume to use the added space.

If you are using macOS, the extra space can be used, but it's a lot more difficult.

Thank you very much! I am luckily using Windows. One of the times it pays off :)

Hi Joe,

You can find the 'migrate' option in the Promise Utility, Background Activities section.

Thank you RP, what does the "migrate" option do exactly?

Do I need to use it going from the P2 R6 to P2 R8?

Thank you...!

Hi Joe,

From the CLI help...

migrate

Usage: migrate [-a <action>] [-d <DaId>]
       migrate -a start -d <DaId> -p <PdIds> -l <LdSettings>

Summary:
The migrate command allows the user to migrate logical drives inside a
particular disk array. The supported migrations are online capacity
expansion, RAID level migration and stripe size migration.

Further more, when starting off with disk array that has a RAID 10
logical drive, and performing a capacity expansion by adding physical
drive(s) to the array, it will cause the RAID 10 logical drive to MIGRATE
to RAID 1E, unless the user explicitly specifies RAID10.

Options:

Do I need to use it going from the P2 R6 to P2 R8?

You'll need to use it to add the extra disks to the array.

Perfect, silly question do I run migrate on the R6, then shut everything down, and swap drives to the R8?

Or run migrate on R8 once i've swapped the 6 drives from the R6, plus the 2 new drives?

Thnak you very much for the help!

Unless you have some way to add extra drives to the R6, this is impossible.

You can't do anything until after you move the drives to the R8 and added the extra drives.
