SSD Wizard Configuration

Hello, I am planning to upgrade my Pegasus32 R4 with SSD drives.

I was wondering if there are any special considerations to take into account when configuring the disk array and logical drive, or any recommended parameters for using the enclosure with SSDs.

I am also wondering if it is necessary to enable a TRIM function in some way, or if everything is handled automatically.

My operating system is Mac OS Sonoma.

Hi Lorenzo,

No configuration changes are needed, you can just use the wizard to create a new Pegasus Volume.

Note, new drives usually come in passthru mode today, you'll have to make the SSDs unconfigured before using the Wizard.

I am also wondering if it is necessary to enable a TRIM function in some way, or if everything is handled automatically.

There is a trim setting but you should leave it disabled or performance will be slow.

Thank you for your reply.

By trim setting  do you mean the CLI command ctrl -a mod -s ”trim=disable"?

I also forgot to ask whether it is preferable to use the APFS file system or the classic HFS+.

Lorenzo.

Hi Lorenzo,

That is the correct command but I believe that trim is disabled by default. You can find the current trim setting with ctrl -v.

While APFS is designed for SSDs, there are still no filesystem recovery tools for APFS, it's probably best to just use HFS+. If you plan on using the Pegasus for time machine, in the process of making the Pegasus a time machine device it will reformat the Pegasus as APFS, so either choice will lead to the same result.
