This is surely a rookie question: Rather than wait for my 3-year old drives to start failing I wish to start replacing one every 3 months. The documentation discusses rebuilding a disk array after a drive fails and the bad drive is identified via the LED lights. In my case, do I simply eject and replace the drive I decide should be removed and follow the same steps?

Hi Paul,
not a rookie question at all.
You are correct about the process, but i would unmount the volume on you Mac first, and open the Utility to monitor the activities.
Then remove the first drive, unscrew it from the tray and screw on the new drive, then put it back in the empty slot.
You may have to mark the drive as unconfigured depending on the state of the drive, and you can either wait for the rebuild to start or start it manually...
