I had a dead drive in Pegasus3 R4. After replacing it I changed the Configuration Status from PassThru to Unconfigured. When trying to rebuild it says:

Failed to start rebuild: all the logical drive on the array are either online or offline

Also the Power LED is permanent RED and the Buzzer is permanent beeping.

Hi Genosse,

I had a dead drive in Pegasus3 R4. After replacing it I changed the Configuration Status from PassThru to Unconfigured. When trying to rebuild it says:

You can't start a rebuild because the LD is offline.

0    Promise        RAID5     9TB       Offline

There seems to be a problem with PD3, which appears to be the drive you replaced.

3    TOSHIBA DT01 SATA HDD  3TB       Encl1 Slot3   OK        Unconfigured

2     3    3TB         3.09MB       Dead, Not usable

PD3 shows as unconfigured in phydrv, but as array0 seq 2 in 'array -v'. Either the failed drive was re-used (a bad idea unless the drive was accidentally unplugged and is known to be good) or the drive was replaced before the drive removal event had registered.

The LD should be online as it's only one drive down on a RAID5. It's possble that PD3's status as an array member is causing problems.

A suggested course of action:

1. Unplug the ThunderBolt cable and let the Pegasus power down.

2. Unseat PD1, PD2 and PD4 (just pull them back an inch or so but leave them in the slots)

3. Plug in the TB cable and let the Peagsus power up with only PD3 plugged in.

4. Clear all array status from PD3 and force it online. Note, PD3 should be the only drive plugged in, phydrv should only show PD3. Try 'array -a del -d 0' and 'phydrv -a online -p 3'.

5. If successful phydrv should show PD3 with an OK status and 'array' should show no array.

6. Unplug the TB cable and let the Pegasus power down.

7. Reseat PD1, PD2 and PD4.

8. Plug in the TB cable and let the Pegasus power up.

9. You should see a degraded array, the LD should be online but critical, and PD3 should be unconfigured and not show in 'array -v'. If this is what you see then you should be able to start a rebuild on PD3.

Trying the suggested things didnt help. I unseated PD1, PD2 and PD4. Both of the commands 'array -a del -d 0' and 'phydrv -a online -p 3' did not work. However phydrv showed PD3 OK and array showed no array. After power up the LD remains offline.

How do I know if the drive removal event had registered?

Hi Genosse,

What do you see with PD3 removed? Does 'array -v' show 3 disks in the array? Is the LD online with PD3 unseated?

Regarding removal, sometimes hard drives will stop responding for a short period, for example, if it runs across a bad block and is trying to recover the data before adding that block to the g-list. So there is a short grace period before a drive gets marked as removed. Theoretically, if you were to remove and replace a drive fast enough, there would be no drive removal event and this could be a problem. But unless you have an extra drive tray, this would not be possible as you'd have to change the drive in the tray before you could insert the new drive.

Hi,

'array -v' seems to show 4 disks in the array. LD is still offline with PD3 unseated.

And I dont think that I have been fast enough so that there has been no drive removal event.
