Any tips on migrating a Pegasus R6, currently tethered to an old Mac Air, to a new Mac Studio? I have the thunderbolt 2-3 converter at the ready but I'm unclear about the steps to install firmware (5.04? available for download? installed using the old Mac or the new?) and drivers. If anyone has successfully completed this migration I would be grateful for advice.

Hi Stephen,

There are only a few steps.

1. First, update the Pegasus firmware to the latest version on the old Intel Mac.

2. Install the DEXT driver on the Apple Silicon Mac Studio.

3. Connect the Pegasus to the new Mac Studio.

That should do it.

Note: The firmware update is done through the Promise Utility.

Hi RP, many thanks for the advice. My response was delayed while I did a fresh backup (which took days) prior to migration, but I have now connected the R6 to the Studio and it is not recognized.

I'll power down and try again, but first let me check the steps you advised. Installation of the DEXT driver was straightforward, so there should be no problem there. Updating the firmware was less clear, since I downloaded the file fom the link provided but could not open it (image not recognized, tried several times). Then I took note of your comment that the firware update is done through the Promise utility so I went over to the Promise Utility .. it indicated the current firmware, so I assumed I was good to go. Should I re-attach the R6 to the old Mac air and try again?  Is there another step to ensure that the firmware is updated?

Thanks!!

SM

Third reboot and my R6 showed up on my Studio, all good and thanks to good advice from RP. I am unsure why it took a couple of reboots, but I'm up and running , so the instructions provided by RP did the trick.

I spoke too soon about the successful migration of my R6 to a new Mac Studio. It did show up on screen, but then the computer crashed and when it restarted there was no Pegasus. I shut it down, started it again, same result. RP, if you can suggest a fix for this problem I would be most grateful.

Hi Stephan.

Could you open a terminal and enter this command and post the output?

systemextensionsctl list | grep promise

Hi Stephen,

OK, the driver is loaded correctly.

Open macOS System Information and click on the Thunderbolt section at the left, do you see the Pegasus?

Also, can you connect the Pegasus to your Intel Mac and let me know the firmware version.

Stephen Marshall posted this 3 weeks ago

The Pegasus will no longer mount on the Intel Mac, and it is not recognized ("no device connected") on the Studio

Stephen Marshall posted this 3 weeks ago

Niether the Intel Mac nor the Studio will recognize the R6, and the R6 will not power down.

Stephen Marshall posted this 3 weeks ago

OK, after a hard restart (unplugged!) the Intel Mac recognized the R6. Trying to sort out the firmware now.

Under "subsystem information in the Promise Utilty" it reads 5.02.000.53

Stephen Marshall posted this 3 weeks ago

The system is now updated so it reads "newest available"  but I am not clear what to do with the link previously given

 https://www.promise.com/DownloadFile.aspx?DownloadFileUID=530

Am I good to try again to migrate over to the Studio with the firmware updated to 5.02.0000.53?

Thanks

Stephen Marshall posted this 3 weeks ago

Sorry, that's version 4.02.000.21. The 5.02 is from the subsystem information panel.

Stephen Marshall posted this 3 weeks ago

The download at https://www.promise.com/DownloadFile.aspx?DownloadFileUID=530 has a .rar extension, not an .img extension, so I am at a loss about how to enter it into the promise utility. It downloads as Fedora 7

Hi Stephen,

With older firmware you may have connection issues with the new Apple Silicon Macs. The latest Pegasus1 version is 5.04.0000.61, which is what the link is to.

Apologies, the firmware link above is not correct, not sure what happened, here is the correct link.

From the Intel Mac, this Promise Utility should be used to update the firmware.

Once it's installed, running and sees your Pegasus, select the Firmware Update option from the Admin option in the top bar. Then choose the Pegasus firmware file and click next. It may take a minute or so, don't use the computer for anything else. Once the update has completed unplug the Thunderbolt cable, then the power cable, then after a few seconds plug in the power cable and the Thunderbolt cable. After the Pegasus reboots the firmware version should show as 5.04.0000.61.

If the Intel macOS is too old to install this Utility let me know the macOS version.

It is not clear to me why you have given me two new links, can you clarify?

R P posted this 3 weeks ago

Hi Stephen,

One is the correct firmware link and the other is for the Utility to update the firmware.

Stephen Marshall posted this 3 weeks ago

I'm afraid my Intel Mac is too old, as it is Sierra 10.12.6, and when Ii try to run the Utility it says that I need 10.13 at least.  Is there a solution other than installing a newer operating system on that old Mac laptop?

R P posted this 3 weeks ago

Hi Stephan,

Sierra, this is a bit of a problem. The latest builds only support as far back as 10.13.

Try this, it's an earlier build. It does not mention which macOS versions are supported but it might work.

Stephen Marshall posted this 3 weeks ago

no luck on that one, so I fired up my obsolete 2011 Mac Pro and it is also too old (10.12.6; this is the machine that the R6 was bought with).  Maybe I can find a way to update the software on one of my two old thunderbolt 2 machines, otherwise I guess thats it. Thanks for your help and patience!

I was able to update the  OS to 10.13  on the old Intel Mac and the Promise Utilty loaded fine. The .img file downloaded fine and was validated on the first firmware update screen. Then, after typing CONFIRM and return I got another error message "Flashing failed, invalid image".  I've tried this several times. No luck.

Hi Stephen,

Can you verify you have a Pegasus R6?

Stephen Marshall posted this 2 weeks ago

Of course. Original enclosure, purchased from Apple Connostoga at the same time I purchased my 2011 Mac Pro. Do you need serial numbers, photos  etc.?

Stephen Marshall posted this 4 days ago

Can we conclude that the firmware of an older R6 cannot be updated and it therefore cannot be used with a new Studio? Are there any suggestions about what might prevent the update ("flashing failed, invalid image")? The R6 has had some drives replaced by a computer shop, in one case with a 4TB (it originally had 6X2TB), otherwise it has not been tampered with. Is there any point in trying to update with a different computer?

Hi Stephen,

Can we conclude that the firmware of an older R6 cannot be updated and it therefore cannot be used with a new Studio?

I've done it hundreds of times, so that conclusion would not be accurate.

What we can conclude is that for some unknown reason you are having difficulty with the update.
