Hello! Initially, 1 controller, 1 cooling unit with a cache battery installed, and 1 cooling unit without a battery were installed in the e610f storage system. Later, a second controller was installed in an empty slot. The question is, is it necessary to install a battery in the cooling unit without a battery, or is it sufficient to have one battery in one of the cooling units?

Hi,

The configuration with only 1 cache battery will work, but the write cache will be disabled. Writethru mode (writes straight to the disks) is considerably slower than Writeback (writes to the cache) mode.

If the write speed is sufficient for your application nothing more needs to be done.

If caching is needed your can enable the cache with only one battery, but if there is a power outage the cached data in controller 2 will be lost. Normally on the first boot after the power is restored the data retained in cache will be written to disk. I don't think this will happen if there is only one cache battery.

To enable cache, you need to disable a controller setting named AdaptiveWBCache. You can find this setting in the controller settings page of WebPAM or you can use this CLI command.

administrator@cli> ctrl -a mod -s "adaptivewbcache=disable"
administrator@cli>
