Dear,

Is there any advice on which of the software tools to use for the Pagasus32 R4?

Is the Promise Utility Pro software offering all settings you can do with the Pegasus32 Series Utility? Any advantages using one or the other, or any limitations?

Thanks!

Kind regards,

Ignace.

Hi Ignace,

I would suggest using the Pegasus32 utility for the Pegasus32.

The Promise Pro Utility is designed for the Pegasus Pro and is backwards compatible with the Pegasus non-pro series, but due to context sensitive options it is not as easy to use. I've been told that the Pegasus Pro Utility has all the functionality if the Promise Utility.

If you have an older Pegasus and need to update firmware, the proper non-pro utility will probably be necessary. And if you have an older macOS, then the Pegasus Pro Utility may not be installable, again you'll need the non-pro utility.

Hi R P,

Actually my Pegasus32 will arrive tomorrow, brand new ;-)!

My Mac is the last batch of Intel i7's, a Mac Mini 2018 model from 2020, currently running MacOS 15.x.

Ok, I'll see which one to pick, thanks for the information!

Kind regards,

Ignace.

Hi R P,

I've tried the Promise Pro Utility, I have the feeling that quite some settings cannot be made (or viewed) in this software?

Things like cache control on the physical drives, or even perform a migration to extend the size of a logical drive. Also many settings or information can only be viewed by saving a system report HTML file and then search in there what you need.

The GUI itself looks nice, but I'm wondering why some of these controls are not there? Oh, for example it seems also not possible to add a scheduled redundancy check? Or for example there is nothing to configure regarding media patrol, even though it looks to be enabled by default in the HTML report?

Ok, maybe some of those settings should be left alone anyway, so yes it's maybe better to hide them? But it's a Pro Utility, right ;)? But still, migration support, or is this a feature that should be avoided too?

Thanks!

Kind regards,

Ignace.

Hi Ignace,

But it's a Pro Utility, right ;)?

You misunderstand, the Pegasus Pro utility is not a Professional version of the Promise Utility, it's the Utility for the Pegasus Pro, a different product line.

The reason you don't see a lot of these options is because there are no failed drives in your RAID, as mentioned previously, the Pegasus Pro Utility is context oriented and it only shows the options available. You will see an unconfigured drives option only when you have unconfigured drives, and inside the unconfigured option you'll find the configuration wizard, but as all the drives in your Pegasus are configured, you won't be able to see any of these options.

It was suggested that you use the Pegasus32 Utility, but use whichever utility works best for you..
