I have a 12TB RAID5 array configured using 4x4TB drives.  I need to expand the array to 24TB and want to use 4x8TB drives.

The existing disk is part of a Backblaze backup and, if I delete the disk by creating a completely new array, it adds complications to the backup strategy due to history inheritance etc.

Is it possible to replace an existing 4TB drive with an 8TB drive, wait for the volume to sync/replicate, then do the same for the remaining 3 drives and when all have completed, expand the array size from 12TB to 24TB?

Hi Milton,

There is a way, but it's complicated and requires use of the CLI.

Use at your own risk,

Thanks... it seems somewhat dodgy... and requires a spare LUN which, of course, I don't have as the RAID5 volume is using all disks... :(

Hi Milton,

The process does not require the use of a spare LUN.

So the "This process requires a redundant LUN, preferably RAID5 or RAID6. This process should also work with RAID 1 and RAID 10 LUNs. This process will not work with a RAID0 or passthru disks." means...?

Hi Milton,

You misunderstand.

Simply put, this process won't work on a RAID0. You can't rebuild a RAID0.

The LUN you expand has to be a RAID5, RAID6 or any RAID with redundant drives.

OK, thanks... when I saw that the process required a redundant LUN, I interpreted it to mean an "extra" LUN as opposed to a LUN with redundant characteristics... oops :)
