Pegasus3 R6 24TB sluggish on Mac Studio

I got a Mac Studio (M1 Max, 64GB, Ventura) in January and the Pegasus just hasn't quite been right. If I go to open a folder (in finder or within an app) it can take quite awhile for it to actually open - it spins and says 'loading' and eventually loads. And a lot of the dates on files don't update; they're still older dates. I tried to run First Aid in Disk Utility but it said it couldn't unmount the volume and thus did nothing. Not sure what to do.

Results of Blackmagic disk test attached. Seems fast in general, but folders open slowly often.

Thanks!

Hi Jon,

Most likely the problem is spotlight constantly indexing the files on your Pegasus. This might help.

  • exclude external drive from spotlight permanently

EDIT: First Aid is a great idea, but it can't be run while the Volume is in use. It will be necessary to close any apps using the Volume, make sure that Finder is not open in the Volume or Spotlight is not indexing in the Volume and that the Terminal is not cd'd to the Volume before the Volume can be unmounted and First Aid can be run.

Thanks, that makes sense. But would that then mean I couldn't use spotlight to find things on the Pegasus?

Hi Jon,

But would that then mean I couldn't use spotlight to find things on the Pegasus?

The idea is to disable Spotlight on the Pegasus, not disable spotlight itself. Note the web page is about excluding an external drive from spotlight, not disabling spotlight.

Haha yes, exactly. So spotlight would no longer find things on the Pegasus.
