Hi,

We're looking to add a Pegasus2 R6 12TB to our network, it'll be connected to a Mac Mini server and all the Mac's will back-up to it via their Time Machine function across the network. We have 1x Windows PC though that needs to backup to it also, we could create an SMB file shared for Windows to see, but will I need additional software to facilitate the Windows backups or do Promise provide this? Or does Windows have something built-in?

The Pegasus series units are direct attached storage, where you can connect the unit directly to a Mac/Windows system, mount the volume and use it.Pegasus just presents the raw disk space to the Mac/Windows that it is connected to and the remaining are taken care by the operating system. Promise doesn't have any software to share the files through SMB to a windows system in the Pegasus units.

Thanks, so if I do this, and use a piece of 3rd-party backup software for Windows that should get me what I need, right? Probably looking to use Veritas System Recovery.

Remeber, this unit is direct-attached to the Mac. But the Windows machine needs to reach it to backup too, across the network. The Windows PC isn't directly attaching.

You can try using any third party software for backups. It may work or may not. Since it has not tested by promise. The Pegasus can directly connect to Windows machine and it should work if you have proper thunderbolt connection and latest driver installed for the unit.

Hi Shaun,

You can create a folder for your Windows backups on the Pegasus, then open System Preferences and select Sharing. Check the File Sharing box and set the Shared Folders and Users to access them, then click the Options button, check "Share files and folders using SMB", and select the Account(s) to use for access from Windows.

This should make the Pegasus folder(s) visible on the network via SMB.

You can access the shares on Windows using Explorer and selecting the Mac mini under "Network", or mount the share in Windows with the "Map network drive" option and select your share.

There are plenty of articles for doing this on the web...

Thanks Richard, understand that bit. Then it'd just take some form of softwasre to automate backups to that share, correct?

That is correct, you would need an app on the Windows side to do your backups to that mapped Pegasus share... 8^)
