Pegasus R6 - Repeated DEAD HDs in same drive Bay

Hi, I have a venerable old Pegusus R6 that has been performing well for many years. It is well out of warranty. Recently the HD in Bay 6 failed and reported DEAD. Not to worry, these things happen. Replaced with brand new  Western Digital NAS HD (6TB), rebuild Volume no problems.

After about 61 hrs of operation the new HD in Bay 6 failed and reported DEAD. Hmmmm, new drive failed after only 61 hrs of operation possible but unlikely. Anyway, replaced the newly DEAD HD in Bay 6 with another brand new WD NAS HD (6 TB), rebuilt Volume with no problems. However, again, after only 80 hrs of operation the new 6TB WD HD failed again in Bay 6 and was reported as being DEAD.

Unlikely to be a problem with two brand new HDs.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem and, if so, is their a known fix. Only alternative is to toss R6 enclosure, and this would be a sad outcome.

Hi Brett,

The Pegasus1 may have developed a slot issue. Slot 6 may have failed in some way.

There's not much that can be done about it, although you can try shutting down the Pegasus, removing PD6 and spraying the SATA port with compressed air to make sure it is clean. Reseating the drive will also wipe the contacts.

If this does not work, you can configure your Pegasus only using 5 bays. This would require removing PD6, copying any data you want to keep elsewhere, deleting the existing array then creating a new Volume with the Wizard, advanced selection. The wizard will create a 5-drive RAID5, put HFS+ on the RAID and it will name the volume Pegasus R6. Then copy the data back in.

The disks are probably not bad, but they might be. One customer bought 6 supposedly new drives from EBAY, but SMART showed that those drives had 98000 hours on them, that's over 11 years of runtime. I suggested that he return them. So check that the drives are new from the SMART attributes. SMART attribute 9 should have power on hours from maybe 0 to 10 or 20, and check for reassigned blocks, UDMA errors and other issues.

Hi,

As suggested I removed all the drives, thoroughly cleaned the enclosure and hard drives with compressed, reassembled and rebuilt the system.

I've been running diagnostics for a few days and so far things have remained stable. Thank you for g8 advice & fingers crossed.

Saddly I have two (2) hard drives showing as DEAD on SMART but  both have less than 60hrs of operation showing on the clock.

Grateful for any suggestions on how to recover these drive.

If you are sure the drives are OK you can still use them.

My suggestion, shut down your Pegasus and remove all the drives. Please keep them in the same order. It is important that these drives be removed as the commands below will wipe all array information from the drives.

With no drives in the Pegasus, insert these 2 drives. You may have to use two drive carriers from the drives you removed.

Then power on the Pegasus and when it has booted hot-insert the drives in the top 2 drive slots.

From the CLI it's easy to reset the drive status. Open a terminal and entre promiseutil to start the CLI.

These commands should help.

phydrv -a online -p 1
phydrv -a online -p 2
array -a del -d 0
array -a del -d 1

These drives should now be unconfigured and ready for use.

Shutdown the Pegasus, remove these 2 drives and insert the array drives and you should be good to go.
