Is there really anything to look for when selecting replacement drives?
Also, I know they are pretty much EOL, only work in one machine and this would mean no Apple GPU, BUT, can you use 2 R4is in the same Mac Pro and RAID all 8 drives together?

Hi Brian,
The Pegasus R4i is not EOL. They are designed for and work on the 2019 Mac Pro. The 2023 Mac Pro has no MPX slot which supplies extra power to the slot. This extra power is needed by both graphics cards and the R4i.
I would check the compatibility list to find which drives have been tested in the R4i.
Due to power limitations of the MPX slot, some drives will not work in the R4i. It's best to stick to the compatibility list.
I don't know why that would be. The PCIe slot provides 75 wats and I would assume the MPX slot quite a bit more.
Hi Brian,

Yes: You can use 2 R4is in a 2019 Mac Pro
No: You can't put all 8 drives in a RAID. But you can create 2 RAIDs and softraid them into a larger volume with Disk Utility.
Has anyone tested performance differences between using SoftRAID vs macOS Disk Utility for combining the volumes? Curious about overhead or stability in real-world use.
