Pegasus32 R8 active all the time

I'm using my Pegasus32 R8 as a time machine on MacOS, but I can hear it working loudly all the time, not only during backup. Is there a way for the Pegasus to remain quiet when not actively backing up? The loud noise is disruptive as it is placed in my bedroom, which also serves as my home office. Additionally, I'm curious about its constant activity. What exactly is it doing? It's not only the loud noise, but also the continuous blinking of all the blue LEDs.

If this is not possible, can I at least turn off the LEDs? They are too bright during nighttime in my small bedroom. At the moment, I have taped them with gaffer's tape to solve the issue, but it looks ugly. I would prefer to have them turned off. I can check the state of the disks in the Utility app, so I don't need the LEDs.

Hi Hiro,

It's hard to tell what's happening exactly, but if your Pegasus32 is new, it's probably busy synchronizing. This writes the parity stripe to for RAID5. Depending on how large your drives are, it may take 1 or 2 days of on-time.

macOS also tends to turn itself on periodically when it's sleeping for various tasks, this will also turn on the Pegasus. There are two ways to stop this, turn the mac off at night (not sleeping, but off), or try leaving it on all the time (there is a program named 'caffeinate' that will accomplish this).

Sorry, the LED brightness is not adjustable.

Be advised that the power supply fan does stay on when the Pegasus32 is sleeping. The Pegasus32 provides up to 85W of power via the Thunderbolt cable for charging and the fan is needed because of this.

Lastly, it appears that you can stop all sound from the Pegasus by dismounting the Volume and unplugging the Pegasus Thunderbolt port at night or when it's not in use.

Hi R P, thank you for the prompt response.

It's not new, but it was formatted a few days ago, and I have already made a couple of backups with Time Machine.

I usually keep it dismounted most of the time, but I wanted to check if there is a solution to fix this activity noise, so I can keep it mounted all the time.

Hi Hiro,

I don't know what the activity is, so what can be said?

The only disk activity the Pegasus will self initiate is a sync or a rebuild. Any disk activity beyond a sync or rebuild is caused by macOS.

Does it rebuild every time I mount it again, or just the first time after formatting?

Hi Hiro,

Does it rebuild every time I mount it again, or just the first time after formatting?

It won't rebuild at all unless you have a drive failure, and this after you replace the failed drive.

A new redundant RAID will sync only once.

Formatting is something macOS does, the Pegasus comes pre-formatted with HFS+.
