Pegasus 2 R4 - No longer starts up as expected

Pegasus 2 R4 - was working fine until after unmounting and then physically disconnecting the unit from my Mac I noticed it did not go to sleep as expected.

Now when powering on from cold the fan starts up but I do not hear the expected disk chattering that shows the unit is coming to ready.

  • Unit shows in System Information as connected to Thunderbolt.
  • System Extension is loaded (com.promise.driverkit.pegasus (21.1.0/1))
  • promiseutil shows no subsystem available.
  • Unit does not respond to power button, power cable has to be removed.

This feels like a sudden hardware failure (for whatever reason) but if anyone has any suggestions on how to possibly revive it that would be most welcome.

Thanks.

Hi Robert,
please check if the device can be detected by the utility if started without any disks inside.
If so, then try to insert one disk at a time, wait for it to be seen in the utility, then repeat this with the other disks.
If not, there can still be an issue with either the thunderbolt cable or the used adapter or indeed with the controller of the Pegasus unit itself.
If the controller is at fault you can try to source another Pegasus chassis, can be any model, also newer Pegasus3 or 32 models with thunderbolt3 connections and 4, 6 or even 8 bay models.
When you insert your 4 disks in that chassis it will mount as your regular R4 unit for full access to your data.

Hi Frank,

Thank you for that advice.

The device cannot be detected by the utility when the disks are removed.

In fact, when the disks are pushed back in when the unit is powered on they do not spin up at all.

I tried connecting the unit back to my old Mac Pro 2013 (which used to host the RAID) and that resulted in the Mac Pro locking up and not even starting when the unit was connected.

This makes me believe it is the logic board that has suddenly failed.

I will look into getting a new chassis but from previous experience it is hard to find chassis being sold without any drives installed, but you never know.

Thanks again.
