Hi Pierre-Alain,
but has we change our server (MacOS to Synology NAS) we will not have any thunderbold (TB2) available, only USB-3.2
The Pegasus 2 is a Thunderbolt 2 device, it is not a USB device and will not work on a USB port.
Pegasus has been tested through an adaptator TB2 <> USB-C ?
Apple claim it adapter is both way :
The Apple adapter is a TB2 to TB3 adapter, it is not a Thunderbolt to USB3.x adapter. It will not allow the Pegasus to connect to a USB port.
The Apple adapter does convert both ways, you can also use it to attach a Thunderbolt 3 device to a Thunderbolt 2 port, but while backwards compatibility is a thing, forward compatibilty is not, so attaching a Thunderbolt 3 device to a High Sierra Mac probably won't work because the High Sierra drivers don't support newer chipsets and thunderbolt protocols.
The confusion here is because both USB 3.x and Thunderbolt 3+ use the USB-C connector. The protocols are different generally not compatible. But the Thunderbolt 4 spec calls for USB 4.x support, so a Thunderbolt 4 port should also work with USB devices. This is not true for USB 4 however. The USB 4.0 spec allowes for Thunderbolt 3 support, but it is not requires and few USB4 ports support Thunderbolt 3. In order to use the Thunderbolt lightening symbol a device needs to pass Thunderbolt certification, this is expensive and few USB 4 devices do this. Oddly, many Thunderbolt docks don't go through certification, you can tell because they do not have the thunderbolt lightening symbol at the ports and the documentation does not use the word Thunderbolt. These docks may work conneting to the Mac, but devices attached to the dock may or may not work.
Interestingly, Thunderbolt has not yet invented it's own connector. Even Thunderbolt 1 and 2 used the mini displayport connector. If you search for a thunderbolt 2 cable on Amazon you'll see a lot of mini displayport cables. I do not know if you can use a mini displayport cable for Thunderbolt 1 and 2. The Thunderbolt 3 cables are higher bandwidth than the USB 3.x cables and they will not work to connect a thunderbolt device. But you can use a thunderbolt 3 cable to connect any USB device because they are higher bandwidth and quality. Thunderbolt cables also need to be certified to use the Thunderbolt logo.
