Hi guys,

I'm looking for a 12TB desktop RAID for video editing, and I keep coming back to the Pegasus range.

So my local CVP offer a 12TB unit as a 4 bay (the new Pegasus 3) and a 6 bay (the older Pegasus 2).

I'm wondering if there's any reason I should opt for the Pegasus 3 R4 over the Pegasus 2 R6?

I'm assuming the R6 will be slightly faster due to haveing more drives, despite it being an older model?
Am I also correct in believing that the R6 will give me 10TB of accessible storage, over 9TB on the R4?

A huge thanks in advance for any help on this one.

Charles

Hi Charles,

Thank you for choosing Promise Technology, Inc. for your storage needs.

Pegasus 3 models offers twice the speed of Pegasus 2 series. In Pegasus 3 you have the thunderbolt 3 technology offering speed of 40Gbps while thunderbolt 2 technology offers 20Gbps.And in Pegasus R6 unit you will get 10 TB of capacity and in Pegasus R4 unit you will get 9 TB capacity becuase of the RAID 5 setup.

Thanks for the response Karthik,

I've since gone through my HDDs and calculated that I've got around 5TB which will be transferred straight away. Meaning I'd be left with just 5TB after that point. So I'm now contemplating an 18TB Pegasus 2 R6 unit instead.

Either way, I think I'll opt for a Pegasus 2 R6. It seems like the 6 bay is a good option to go for, in terms of speed and extra space under RAID 5. And I'm not likely to ever hit the speed benefits of Thunderbolt 3 in the newer version. I'll be using the unit largely for video editing, but the Pegasus 2 speeds should be plenty enough.

Thank you very much for you help. :)
