I am using a Pegasus 2 R6 with 6 - Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB drives; 18TB in all. One of my drives started to log a "Command Time Out" minor error and the system kept resetting the drive. I also experienced issues with copying files as I was getting system errors. So my first thought was to replace the drive before it failed. Was this the right thing to do?

So I hot-swapped the drive with the error with a new drive of the same model. The device power button turned red when I took out the bad drive and when I replaced it with the new drive the button turned orange. I then went to the Promise Utility and under Background Activities started a Rebuild on the new drive. It has been sitting at "0% Running" for an hour. Is this normal? How long does a manual rebuild take? BTW... all external drive lights are solid blue.

What is the RAID level configured on the system & What is the status?

Christopher Siwinski posted this 23 September 2018

Raid 5; Critical.

Hi Christopher,

It looks like another drive is started developing the error and it will not allow new drive to complete the rebuild process.Kindly stop the rebuild process and take a backup of your data as soon as possible from the volume. The dual drive failure may cause the data inaccessible on RAID 5 setup.

I tried to stop the Rebuild twice and I got the messages in this order:

  • Failed to stop rebuild: <something.... something..> system error.
  • Failed to stop rebuild: another rebuild command is pending.

Can you try to pause the rebuild process?

Christopher Siwinski posted this 23 September 2018

I tried to Pause the Rebuild and it was unsuccessful.

  • Failed to pause rebuild: another rebuild command is pending.

Do I turn off the device manually?

This is exactly why I switched from NetGear ReadyNAS to Pegasus. It seems whenever I move large volumes of data around this issue occurs. I barely us the device and then when I do JINX!

I did a hard reboot and severity is Major now. I am going to try to backup my files to another external HD.

Quick update. I was able to backup all data to two 4TB external HDs. I was then able to format the new HD to replace the damaged one. I decided to reformat the entire array to a 15TB Logical Drive with a 3TB spare. So the rebuild process worked and everything is back online. There does not seem to be an issue with the hardware or the other drives.
