Does anyone know if this JBOD can be used with RAID controller card installed in a server ? For example with MegaRAID SAS 9380-8e ? We had it connected to E630f SAN but it recently died ;-(

Hi Derek,
The J830S can be used with a SAS HBA. The MegaRAID can put a RAID volume on the drives that can be used by your host system.
If there was a LUN from an Ex30 on the JBOD drives, it won't be visible or mountable from the SAS HBA. You will be able to use the storage but it won't work for data recovery.

Thanks for a quick reply. Will any recent MegaRAID cards work ? For example 9380-8e ? As far as supported drives, should we be looking at compatibility list of the RAID card itself or that of J830 ?

Any MegaRAID with compatible SAS connectors should work. It's always a good idea to update the MegaRAID firmware if updates are available.
Regarding the compatibility list, SATA drives are tightly spec'd and there are few compatibility issues today, I would suggest looking at the drive sizes tested, any similar sized drives should work. But I would be cautious with drives much larger than those tested, 14 TB drives were not available when the Jx30 was built and they were not tested. It's possible that there may be issues with drives many times larger than those tested. There may also be issues with the MegRAID with drives much larger than those tested by LSI.
