Is the housing for pegasus32 R8 all the same, regardless of the size of the drives inside?

Hello,

I have an old pegasus3 r8x8TB, and I am in the process of purchasing new drives (8TB or larger) to replace as single drives fail. So that I will end up with the old pegasus3 'housing' but all new drives inside.

1) how likely would the housing itself fail? vs if I replace all the drives into the old pegasus3 as above, will I essentially have a new machine?

2) if at some point in the future the pegaus3 housing fails, can I buy a new pegasus32 housing only (or, the cheapest r8 with the smallest drives and then just transfer the new drives into the new housing?)

3) can I daisy-chain a pegasus3 and a pegasus32?

4) Are the housing components (connectors, chips, etc) of the pegasus32 r8 series are all identical, regardless of whether their drives are 4tb, 8tb, 10tb ... 18tb, etc? Are there any differences at all?

Thanks -- I'm a bit of a newbie

Hi Rima,

Im not sure what you are asking here.

2) if at some point in the future the pegaus3 housing fails, can I buy a new pegasus32 housing only (or, the cheapest r8 with the smallest drives and then just transfer the new drives into the new housing?)

Yes. But be aware that the Pegasus32 is only available new with hard drives installed.

3) can I daisy-chain a pegasus3 and a pegasus32?

You can daisy chain them, but put the Pegasus 32 first.

4) Are the housing components (connectors, chips, etc) of the pegasus32 r8 series are all identical, regardless of whether their drives are 4tb, 8tb, 10tb ... 18tb, etc? Are there any differences at all?

The only difference between different SKUs is the drive size.

Thanks very much!

What is the model of the drives in the pegasus32?

(for example, I learned that the drives in the pegasus3 were Toshiba Mg05aca800e)

Hi Rima,

Here is the link to the Pegasus32 description (https://www.promise.com/us/Products/Pegasus/Pegasus32), in the "Massive Capacity and Extreme Performance" section you can see the "Learn more" link to the Pegasus32 Compatibility List, with all of the Drivers' models.

Always welcome!

Thank you,

I did look at the Compatibility List and the Data Sheet, and neither says exactly which hard drives will arrive installed in eg the Pegasus32 R8 64TB model.

I want to know because I am thinking of using the hard drives from the new pegasus32 64TB in my old pegasus3 64TB, and I want to make sure that what arrives installed in the pegasus32 will be compatible with the Pegasus3.

Can you help me figure out which drives (exact specs and model number) would arrive installed in the Pegasus32 R8 64TB?

Hi Rima,

There is no single drive shipped with the Pegasus. The exact drive shipped will be determined by cost and availability.

That being said, the drives shipped with the Pegasus have been Toshiba as far back as I remember. I just checked the lab's Pegasus 1 and it has Toshiba drives. But this does not mean that the Pegasus we ship tomorow will have Toshiba drives.

To maximize compatibility in a RAID set, we recommend using drives from the same manufacturer. If the 1TB drive in the lab's Pegasus 1 were to fail, that drive model is long EOL and unlikely to be found, so we would use another Toshiba drive. But it would not have to be a 1TB drive, it could be a 2TB or a 4TB drive.
