Hi Team

I have a disk array with four 4TB HDDs configured in RAID5 (Vess A3340D). Currently, the capacity is not enough. Can I add another 4TB HDD to this disk array?

Thanks

Hello,

Adding a disk to an existing RAID 5 array on the fly is not possible with most hardware RAID controllers. This is because the array needs to be rebuilt to include the new disk, and data is at risk during the rebuild process. Expanding a RAID 5 requires specific functionality from the RAID controller, and it's best to consult the documentation for your Vess A3340D controller.

Here's what the documentation might say:

Not possible: Adding a disk to an existing RAID 5 might not be supported by the Vess A3340D controller.

Rebuild required: If supported, expanding the RAID 5 will involve a rebuild process which can take a long time and put your data at risk.

Consult the Vess A3340D manual for specific instructions on expanding a RAID 5 array.

I hope the information may help you.

Hi Mark,

From  the Product Manual.

As you can see the Vess A3340 has 8 drive slots.

Apparently 4 are empty. If this is correct you can add up to 4 more drives.

Looking at WebPAM and the CLI, it does not look like the Vess A has the 'migrate' command as other Promise Subsystems do. The migrate command can add disks to an array and expand the LUNs to use the additional space.

But Plan B would be to add more drives and create a new array+LUN that can be used as additional storage.

I chose to create a new Diskarray for the additional HDD. Thanks for your support
