HP Z2 Mini G9 & Pegasus Family

I currently have two Promise Pegasus storage arrays

A Pegasus2 R6 and a Pegasus1 R6

Both work great with an M1 Mac Mini on MacOS Sonoma

I am trying to get them to work on this HP Z2 Mini G9 and I am having some problems

The Pegasus2 does not show up in the Thunderbolt Control Center but it does show up in Windows Device Manager and seems to be fine

I've currently got a Mac file system on it and don't have time to reformat and test read / write, but I will just assume for now it's okay, maybe I can test more in a few days

Pegasus utility recognizes it and everything seems fine there too

The Pegasus1 also does not show up in the Thunderbolt Control Center...but it doesn't show up in Windows Device manager either :(

Anyone have any suggestions?  HP support are not very helpful.

I have also opened up a case with Intel as I was under the assumption that Thunderbolt was not supposed to have compatibility problems like this, due to all the testing and certification

I guess I was wrong, lol :(

BTW this is also my first time ever using thunderbolt on Windows, and I have to say I am not impressed

I don't even see any events in the event viewer, I'm not sure how I'm supposed to even troubleshoot this -- also the thunderbolt controller doesn't show up in device manager how you would expect it to ::shrug::

Hi Nick,

We have tested some of the larger HP G9 models and have found some compatibility issues. But I am told that the HP Z2 Mini G9 has been tested with the Pegasus32 and worked. So earlier Pegasus models should work theoretically.

Potentially the Pegaus not showing in the TB console could caused by the Pegasus 2 being Thunderbolt 2. When the TB3 Pegasus32 worked, it showed in the TB console. As long as the LUN shows in the device manager things seem to be working.

Apparently that control panel is all the info Windows Thunderbolt systems provide.

With a Pegasus32 connected to a working HP G9, I recall it appeared in the TB control center, the Windows Device Manager and the Windows Disk Management console. And it was necessary to give the LUN permission to mount from the TB control center.

MacOS puts a few partitions on a disk, you might want to do a quick init in the LUN before putting an NTFS or exFAT filesystem on the Pegasus. This will wipe all previous partition information.

This is a problem. As a potential untested workaround, have you tried daisychaing the Pegasus 1 off the Pegasus2? Since the Pegasus2 is recognized, perhaps the Pegasus 1 will also be recognized through the daisychain.

In my testing the TB controller also could not be found in the device manager. Annoying.

Tried daisy chaining, no luck.  On the bright side, I installed Mac drive and everything works with the Pegasus2.  No issues, performance is great.

The thunderbolt controller disappearing happens to me to, I guess it's some kind of power saving feature.  This one is using maple ridge, if that matters, and I've got all the security stuff turned off.

I am going to try to ask HP if they have any suggestions, but it looks like all the connectivity stuff is handled in firmware and it's basically a black box, there's no visibility at all into what the chip is doing.

It may be time to finally retire the Pegasus 1 😓
