DS4600 won't turn on

I just noticed that my Smartstor DS4600 wasn't powered on. I checked the power cable and power strip to make sure power is okay, still not powering on.

New power supply required? Any instructions out there for confirming if this is the issue?

Hi Lawrence,

Kindly mark and remove all the drives from the unit and try to power up the unit to see if the unit powers up without the drives. If the unit powers up, then one of the drive is creating an issue which might need further troubleshooting. If the unit doesn't power up then it could be an issue with the DS4600 unit. These units has reached its end of life and has a very limited support options.

Kindly go to https://support.promise.com to register the unit and create a support ticket to update us the status after preforming the above suggested steps for further investigation.

OKay I performed those steps and created a support ticket but haven't received a reply in some time...

So support hasn't been very helpful; their advice is to go buy another DS4600 and then insert the drives to access the data. When asked if any of their other current products were compatible, they weren't sure.

Does anyone know if there's any way to access the data off these four drives that were RAID 5 arrayed?

Barring that, anyone have a functioning DS4600 lying around I can borrow? :)

Hi, I exactly have the same problem since this morning. I removed the 4 disks and the Smarstore units start for 2 ou 3 seconds and then stops. Power Supply issue?

Could some one tell me what I should do: repairing it and how? Find another unit who could give me access to the disks?

Thx a lot for the help...

I eventually went and bought a used one on eBay for $140, just to spin the drives up and dump the data onto a new drive. Remember to number your drives before you pull them...

Hi Nicolas,

It is most likely a power-supply issue, unfortunatly no replacements are available as the NS4600 is long EOL.

An EBAY replacement for the NS4600 is one possibility, if it can be found.

I expect that the simplest viable solution would to find some equivalant replacement for the power-supply. As I recall, the NS4600 power supply can be pretty easily removed from the bottom of the unit. Then it's a matter of googling an equivalant power-supply. This will violate the warranty of course, but I suspect it's long expired anyway.

We have done a fair bit of compatibility testing, but the only test done on this product line showed that the NS4300 filesystem cannot be read by the NS4600 (the array is recognized, but not the filesystem). Other than that nothing can be said.

Hi all. I'm posting in this thread because I have a similar problem. I wanted to know more about Pradeeps comment - "If the unit powers up, then one of the drive is creating an issue which might need further troubleshooting." I have this problem on my NS4600, have identified the drive which appears to be the cause of the problem and wondered what the recommended next course of action might be?

Honestly, the solution I was given was to just go and buy a used one that still worked off of eBay for $200, swapy drives in (be sure to mark them so you keep the same order) and as soon as the used one fires up, start dumping the footage onto a brand new backup drive. There’s nothing they can do for you on here

Yeah, but the unit apparently works without one drive so its the drive thats the problem, not the unit? So if I get another unit, put my 4 drives in there, I assume I will either have exactly the same problem or at best, all drives will be seen and it will boot but I still wont be able to recover my data?

There are a couple on ebay at the moment but shipping costs for me are prohibitive.
