Any Issue Using Promise3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter?

Is there any issue connecting a Promise3 RAID to a Thunderbolt 3 cable having a Thunderbolt 2 adapter, connected to a Mac Mini (having Thunderbolt 2)? I am trying to have RAID support for both a Thunderbolt 3 (MacBook Pro & iMacPro) & Thunderbolt 2 (Mac Mini) environment.

What's confusing is that https://thunderbolttechnology.net/tech/faq indicates "solutions and products built to Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 specifications will work with Thunderbolt 3 via an adapter"

However, Promise3 documentation indicates:

1. The Pegasus3 can only be used with client devices equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port
It CANNOT be connected to a Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 1 port." That would suggest that the Mac Mini could not support a Promise3 product under any circumstances.

2. "Before you connect Pegasus3 to your computer, make sure the computer has the most recent Thunderbolt 3 driver installed (while the Mac Mini has only a Thunderbolt 2 port).

If I am limited to using a Promise2 RAID to support the Mac Mini, would it have no problem supporting my Thunderbolt 3 computers (via the T3 to T2 cable adapter), knowing that I'd take a performance hit on data transfer rates?

Hi Alfredo,

You can connect the Pegasus3 unit to your MAC mini with thunderbolt2 to thunderbolt3 adapter and the unit should be detected without any issues.

Kindly make sure to install the drivers for this MAC system prior to connecting the Pegasus3 unit. Go to the link below to download the latest drivers.

Also, make sure to have the compatible hardware. Go to the link below to download the compatibility list.

Thanks, Pradeed. I was able to connect my Promise3 12TB RAID to my Mac Mini (Late 2014 purchased from Apple in 2017), operating on OS 10.13.2, performing the upgrades to the drivers and firmware with much appreciated tech support assistance.

The confusion over Promise RAID connectivity is due to the list of products supported (see list link below) does not at present list the Mac Mini. Reference: https://promise.com/DownloadFile.aspx?DownloadFileUID=4755

However,  all seemed well after installing the drivers and then connecting the Promise3 to the Mac Mini. Searching for Promise on Spotlight on the Mac immediately listed Promise Utility, which was opened. Page 112 of the product manual had not been clear how to access the Promise Utility.

Be prepared for some delay in the RAID synchronization process. I'm at 61% after 19 hours. I don't know if additional hours can be expected, beyond that considered normal, having changed (before synch) the pre-configured RAID 5 to RAID 6. Anyone performing a similar Mac Mini install may want to factor in additional time for the synch.

Note the current firmware version (as of Jan 29, 2018) is 6.00.0000.18
