Advice for adding new computer to 2013 R6

I have a constantly used R6 bought with, and still used with, a 2013 Mac Pro ("trash can"). The Mac Pro is no longer reliable and I want to buy a new computer easily used with the R6. I was told that the Studio would not work with the old R6. I'm a photographer with limited computer skills ... would it be practical to hook a new Mac Mini to the old R6?

Thanks

Hi Stephen, my apologies for the late reply.

the 1st generation Pegasus devices can still be used on new Mac hardware and OS versions, but please keep below in mind.

You need to have an adapter to connect your Thunderbolt2 device to the new USB-C type Thunderbolt 3/4/5 connectors on new Mac hardware, these are sold by Apple directly.

Also, please check on your existing Mac in the Pegasus Utility > controller if you have the latest version firmware installed on your device. It should be 5.04.0000.61 for the 1st generation Pegasus.
If not, download the file from here: https://www.promise.com/DownloadFile.aspx?DownloadFileUID=4530

Once downloaded, open the Pegasus Utility, unlock it in the bottom left corner, then, in the main Mac menu, choose Admin > Firmware update to start the update process.

Lastly, you will need to install the DEXT driver for the latest version Pegasus32 hardware on the new Mac.
This driver is backwards compatible with the older Pegasus hardware.

You can also install the Pegasus32 utility on the new Mac to manage the device.

Kind regards,
Frank

Many thanks for those clear and detailed instructions!

! downloaded the Pegasus Utility file from the above link but it reads as "Image not recognized" on my old Mac Pro. If I shut down the R6 and hook it up to a new Mac with a Thunderbolt 3-2 adapter, will I still be able to instal the dext driver and access the R6?

On your old Mac you can install the Pegasus1 utility. (I assume you are referring to the 1st generation Pegasus, so the silver grey box ?)
This is also necessary if you need to update the firmware of older versions Pegasus, it is not possible with the Pegasus32 utility.

Pegasus1 Utility: https://www.promise.com/DownloadFile.aspx?DownloadFileUID=4619

You can install the DEXT driver on your new Mac with or without the device attached, you will need to allow the driver installation in your Mac's system settings, a popup will appear during installation to notify you of this and to guide you to the correct Mac menu.

Once done your Pegasus should be detected automatically and the volume should mount after a short while.

If not then it might be necessary to update the firmware before it can be recognized.

Many thanks for taking the time to offer this detailed advice! Opening the Promise Utility I see that my version is 5.02.000.53. Upon unlocking and navigating to the Firmare update, I tried again to open the file for 5.04, but again I got "image not recognized". So, it would appear that I cannot update the firmware from my old Mac Pro (and yes, the R6 is the silver first generation), which is a problem if I will not be able to update with Pegasus 32 utility on a new Mac. Is there another way to obtain the file for 5.04 to allow the firmware update?

Can you download the file(s) again directly from the product support pages ?
The 5.04.0000.61 file is listed as SR3.0.2
Due to old age of the 5.02.0000.53 firmware it might be necessary to update to SR 1.2 (V5.02.0000.98) first.

Please go to https://www.promise.com/Support/downloadcenter
Click 'Legacy Products' then choose Pegasus > Pegasus Series > Pegasus R6

Please also doublecheck that the Pegasus Utility version used to update the firmware on your old Mac is actually version 4.00.0000.09.

Many thanks for your patience with this problem. The firmware on my old Mac Pro is 4.02.0000.21.

I was unable to update from 5.02.0000.53 to 5.04.000061. Attempts to update using the links for SR 1.2 or SR3.0.2 from the download centre led to "image not recognized" messages.

Attempts to update firmware from the "updates available" link on the Promise Utility just hung up (the screen says 5.04.0000.61 is available; I can apparently download it from that screen but the "confirm firmware update" link on the downlad is not active).

My apologies for taking so much of your time on this but I'm stumped.

Hi Stephen,

The firmware files are firmware images that have to be installed by the Promise Utility, they are not macOS executable files.

Since you have a new mac it's most likely running Sequoia.

So you need to use this firmware file (v5.04.0000.61).

And install it with this Promise Utility (v4.06.0000.01).

And you will need to install this driver (Pegasus DEXT driver v21.1.1).

There are 2 pdf files in the driver dmg that show how to install the driver and give it permission to run.

Many thanks. I had hoped to update the R6 from my Mac Pro before buying a new Mac, but that does not seem to be possible. So, I guess I'll jump in and by a new Mac and hope I can get it running with the R6.
