Replacing a disk in a degraded array (logical drive OK)

Hello :)

Suddenly today there as an issue with a disk in an array. It appears as dead.

The array appears as degraded, but logical drive (RAID 5) is OK.

This has happened before, and I've just swapped in another empty hard disk without issue. However this time for some reason the new disk is just appearing as unconfigured without becoming part of an array.

The unusual aspect is that the logical drive is still appearing as OK instead of degraded. It's like the controller hasn't fully worked out that there's a problem.

What can I do to add the unconfigured drive to the degraded array? Commands `rebuild`, `migrate`, and `transit` don't seem to allow this. I'd quite like this to get done quickly as I don't like that one of the other disks is in PFA status, I want to replace that one manually too.

`phydrv` output:

===============================================================================
PdId Model Type Capacity Location OpStatus ConfigStatus
===============================================================================
1 ST1000DM005 SATA HDD 931.32GB Encl1 Slot1 OK Ary0 SeqNo0
2 SAMSUNG HD10 SATA HDD 931.32GB Encl1 Slot2 PFA Ary0 SeqNo1
3 SAMSUNG HD10 SATA HDD 931.32GB Encl1 Slot3 OK Ary0 SeqNo2
4 WDC WD2002FF SATA HDD 1.82TB Encl1 Slot4 OK Unconfigured

SuperTrak EX8650 (defective): Accessing array with different controller?

Hello!

I've had a SuperTrak EX8650 in use for quite a while now, running a Raid 6 array of 5 disks (4 TB each) with 1 assigned hot-spare (but no BBU). It uses the latest available firmware (from 2011 or 2012: V1.10.0000.01).

First, some background and a description of what's happened: A few days ago the controller suddenly stopped working: it started beeping (two short consecutive beeps, repeating). After that the system froze on the first access to the array. This happened a few more time, but I was able to back up some of the data (about half) as it worked for abouit a day and a half. Unfortunately, I can no longer get the system to boot without it starting to beep for more than a minute (if at all, usually beeping starts during the controller post screen now).

Now it looks like the controller itself is dying: When I disconnect the drives and enter the controllers own BIOS, I can't access the Log, it just tries for a good while and eventually reports error 0x80. I've entered the bios once with drives connected (enduring the incessant beeping), and I wasn't able to do anything useful either. I did get a message similar to "Internal error in firmware raid core" or something similar.

If the exact message matters, I can try that again.

My actual question:

I assume I can access the array normally if I get a hold of a replacement controller of the same type?

The problem is, these are relatively hard to get here (germany/europe)

and/or expensive for just reading the data basically once...

But can I also access the array with a similar controller but of slightly different type?

For example, would a EX8350 work? It's much more easily available.

Of course I'd need some different cables? But other than that?

I don't see a firmware of similar age as mine (those for EX8350 are older), and that concerns me as one of the (only) changes was supporting drives over 2TB (and sectors above 4k).

Are there any other (simple/cheap) options?

Thank you

SuperTrak 4650 Drive Offline

Hello,

I have an SuperTrack controller with 4 SATA drives configured as a RAID5 drive array. Late last week, I noticed that Drive2 was marked as Ok, FPA. I ordered a new identical 500GB drive to replace the failing drive.

I recieved the drive this morning and began to replace the drive. From within WEBPAM, I set the physical drive offline(Force Offline), and removed the drive. Installed the new one, and could not return the Drive2 to online status.. In the process, of removing the drive from the SuperSwap enclosure, the drive in slot 3 went RED. I reinstalled Drive2 hoping that I could recover the array, and unfortunately cannot get the Drive2 & Drive3 back to GREEN status.

Is there a possibility that the controller over time will reconcile these drives, or is there a way to force these drives back online?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated..

WebPAM on 64-bit Fedora

I just updated my serever to Fedora 26, from a very old 32-bit system (Fedora 20?) in which WebPAM was used to monitor the SuperTrak 12350. Now the new OS is 64-bit, and the WebPAM installer failed to intall. Specifically, during the installation process it tried to intall Java's JRE and failed. I tried both versions of WebPAM that is avaialbe for download and get the same error.

SuperTrak EX8350 Online Expansion

I have an EX8350 in Raid 6 with 6 1TB drives originally. Over the years I have replaced the 1TB with 2TB drives and now have all 6 as 2TB drives. This leaves the array with 4TB of space as all drives are used as 1TB with 1TB free per drive.

How do I expand the array to now make use of all the drives 1TB free space? Included is a screen view of the WebPAM logical drive view.

SuperTrak EX4650 Disk sizes

Hi.

I own a Promise SuperTrak EX4650 Raid controller.

Right now I have 4x500 GB disks installed running in RAID 5 = 1.5TB virtual disk.

I want to upgrade my capacity, but Im unsure about how much capacity my controller supports.

I've upgraded to the latest firmware (SR4.2).

I've read in the manual that my controller supports up to 3 TB disk (4x750 GB).

Will I be able to install 4*2TB drives in RAID 5 (6 TB) and then create 2 virtual disk of each 3 TB?

or should I look for a new controller?

I look forward to read your advise

Monitor SuperTrak EX16650 in VMWare ESXi 5.0 host

Hi!

We have a ESXi 5.0 host up and running with the SuperTrak EX16650 controller today. We installed the drivers using the package "scsi-stex-4.07.0000.75-1OEM.500.0.0.472560.x86_64.vib" from the promise website and it seems to be working as intended.

The challenge is that we cannot see the RAID controllers state, aka we do not know the RAID status.

So my questions are:
Is it possible to query the host somehow to get the controller state?
Could one possible solution be to enable passthrough on the controller and install the monitor-utilities on a linux guest?

Any insights on this matter would be of great value, as we obviously would need to know our disks health.

BR,
