Vess R2600 - Reset default password

How to reset the administrator password of the Vess R2600 series devices to the default password.
(Also confirmed to work on Vess R1840i unit)

Download attached .zip file.
(please make sure to rename the file to "OPAS_vr2k_resetpw.zip", it needs to have only OPAS in capitals, all other characters lower case, it will not work otherwise)

Copy it to the root folder of a FAT32 formatted USB drive.

Power on the Vess device, wait for it to boot up.
Insert the USB drive in the top USB port in the front panel of the device.
The device will start beeping and the LED on the USB slot will blink for a while.
Wait for the process to finish, remove the USB drive, done!
Login with default 'administrator' / 'password'

The USB stick will now contain an extra folder called OPAS_OUTPUT with 2 logfiles.

One servicereport file and a .txt file, the latter should show the password reset process.

Vess R2600Ti. migration.

Hello everyone.

I replaced the disks in the storage system with 1.2 TB disks with 2.4 TB disks. This is an array with 1 logical disk, on which VMs operate. How can I increase the logical disk using the free space on the disks?

I read that this can be done using the tool - Administration - Background tasks - migration. But I'm not completely sure about this.

Tell me the best way to do this?

This storage system is in operation and not in testing, so I can't experiment.

Hello, friends. A disk in my cluster that was on the storage system crashed. There are no violations in the storage system. All arrays are fine, this is what the monitoring panel shows. The logs are empty. When running Redundancy Check on the array, an error occurs and a pause. array RAID 6. This RAID has 2 logical disks. One disk (logical) does not work, and the second one works. How can I recover data using VESS tools?

Vess R2600ti. Uninterruptible power supply

Hello. I have a Vess R2600ti. Not long ago I reconnected to a new UPS (uninterruptible power supply). I have 3 power supplies. I decided to connect the power supplies to different UPSs, so that if one backup power source fails, the system will work on the second one. But the problem is that when I started checking this circuit, my vess beeped but did not start, although I thought that it would work on one power supply and report that the second one did not work.

Maybe I'm wrong. Write how the system should work if one power supply fails. The screenshot shows how I connected it to the backup power supply. And one more question: I have 3 power supplies (this can be seen from the screenshot) Which one is the backup power supply? If which power supplies fail, will the system shut down?

Vess R2600fi RAID10 migration ultra slow

Hello!

I have an issue with my Vess R2600fi (dual controller) unit. I have started RAID10 array migration from 8x8TB to 14x8TB.

First, the migration is very slow, regardles of the migration priority (6% after 4 days at 20MB/s rate). I can blame ~400 I/O per second from VMs running on top of it, but I was expecting faster migration where there is no VM activity over night...

The bigger issue is that one of the source HDDs failed in between. I cannot rebuild the array because the migration is in progress, I cannot cancel the migration just because there is no such option.

Question: is there any hidden CLI command to stop the migration, rebuild and move VMs away?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Hello,

We had a power outage who's durration exceeded the UPS battery capasity and the device lost power. I had to touch the power button to get this up and would rather it go in it's own. How can I configure the R2000 to automaticly start up when the power returns?

VR2600tiD minimum power supplies

I have a 2600tiD with default 3x power supplies.

When testing / simulating power failures, I noticed the system would hiccup and "lock up" if 2 of the 3 power supplies were offline.

By hiccup, I mean the unit would respond look to respond normally, then start its beeping due to fault. But then a short time later (few seconds?) I would hear all the fans ramp up, like it rebooted. After this, the unit continually beeps, but never comes back after all power is restored (about 10 minutes of waiting(. I have to completely shut it down, then power back up to restore.

So I guess my question is two parts.

1. What is the minimum power suppliues to run (looks to be two before the unit acts wonky).

2. How can I remotely restore the unit if 2 of 3 supplies go offline?

I could not find any specific details for either of these via the manual so any gudance would be appreciated.

Created two portals one on 10Gb and one on 1Gb interface, no other portals for NAS. Ports that are included in portals for NAS are excluded for iSCSI. Both have links and ping works fine.

I can do SMB/AFP on both from any of my computers but no NFS?!? I've tested on Linux, macOS, esxi

VESS R2600 problems and questions

First the issues I am having:

I have two Vess R2600xid enclosures (dual 10Gb/s controllers in each unit), each paired with an J2600 disk enclosure that seemed to be working properly though our initial testing prior to putting them into real use. Since we started using them, we have seen a problem where iSCSI connections are being reset out from under the server connected to each unit. Each unit is dual controller. On initial start, both controllers come up and seem to be working. After a period of use, controller 2 disappears from the GUI. In the CLI, it acts like there is no controller 2. When I generate a system report, it shows 2 controllers in the system, but no details available for the second one. In the part of that system report I can see, there are no errors listed.

Both VESS systems are being used as backup repositories. We are using VEEAM on Windows Server 2012 R2 connected vi iSCSI over 10 Gb/s fiber. Jumbo frames is enabled and verified to be working from end to end. The VEEAM backup job consistently completes incremental backups, writing the incremental backup file to the repository on the VESS. But at seemingly random times late in the process of generating the synthetic full backup, an error is thrown that VEEAM just reports as "ConnectionReset". It seems to be related to larger files as jobs generating smaller files (less than 200 GB or so) usually complete. I see similar issues using windows explorer to copy large files to the VEEAM, but they are a little more sporadic and hard to nail down.

Questions (other than the obvious "How do I fix it")

1 - Even after using the CLI or GUI to do a sybsystem restart, the 2nd controller does not show up. Only a hard power cycle does it come back. Is there something else I can do remotely to get that 2nd controller working again? One of the units is over an hour away.

2 - Is there a recommended firmware level? I installed the latest available about 2 weeks ago. Is this possible firmware related?

3 - Is there any way for me to look at the service report that is generated? I would love to see more diagnostic info that might point me in a direction. We already have a ticket open with support, but I would like to have access to the same info.

Hi,

Need help in identifying performance bottleneck with VESS R2600

Greetings, I have a pair of R2610xis with dual 10Gb controllers, using iSCSI and 7.2K SAS drives, Each VESS is paired with a DataCore SANSympony frontend to provide storage RT mirroring between two sites. Currently, the 10Gb ports on each controller are trunked together to form two portals, both in the same subnet. The VESS and frontend server are connected via a single iscsi initiator/LUN through a 10Gb switch fabric. The idea is to maximize performance and redundancy via multipath between the VESS portals and the frontend server, which also has multiple 10Gb connections. Currently, this setup seems to have trouble maintaining relatively low load (200MB/S, 2-3K IOPS) and gets into high latency issues. I noticed traffic is only flowing through one of the two portals, so I'm looking for guidance on how to isolate this performance bottleneck, properly setup multipath between the VESS and the frontend server, and how to make the most out of this setup?

Thanks,
-HF

When is a 2600i a boat anchor?

I have purchased several Promise arrays over the years, and I have had good performance. Now, I am replacing a NetApp installation with dual controllers. What Promise does not tell you is that dual controllers will not work with SATA drives unless you buy a Promise SATA to SAS adapter for each drive. The cost of the adpaters is more than the cost of the controller, and almost the cost of a single controller array. I have tried Promise tech chat. Beyond telling me that I needed an adapter, they could not tell me where to get an adapter or the cost of the adapter. I finally found a "Blackjack" adpater, and the photo showed FOUR adapters in one pack for about $110. But, when I went to order, I was told that EACH adapter was $110. $1600 per array for $5 adapters?! Then I tried sales, who said that indeed it was one adapter for $110, and they could not explain why a single to dual controller upgrade kit did not come with the adapters required for a dual controller system. You see, a SINGLE controller works with SATA drives with no adapter, but a DUAL controller system will only work with SATA to SAS adapters. Then, I was passed to a regional sales rep who could understand the insanity of the situation, but could not help. He said his manager would call me before the end of the day. It has been a week, and nothing from Promise. So, instead of working arrays, I have 10G boat anchors. Has Promise abandoned the storage array business?

Vess Clock Jumping back to Jan 2016

I have a dual controller Vess R2600i. I found the clock had jumped back to Jan 17, 2016.

I set the clock to the current time, and have synced it with NTP. The clock currently is jumping back in forth between the current time and Jan 17, 2016. Some log entries have the current time, some have Jan 17, 2016 06:45:38.

Vess R2600tiD iSCSI target connection limit

I am trying to understand this - tech support just confused me. Maybe someone here can shed some light.

Under iSCSI management, in Target, i show only one ID (0, default, I never added this...). When I expand it, itshows that there are a "Max Connections" of 4. In my environment, I need to have 6 or more concurrent connections.

Under IO Network Manangement, I have two portals set up (an LACP trunk or two ports, one trunk per controller card).

Does this connection limit on the target stop at 4 reguardless of how many portals set up, or is this per portal?

My environment will be 3x(and more down the road) XenServers with dual networks for multipath talking to each trunked portal. On another unit, this shows up as 6 total connections.

Any thoughts or input would be apreciated.

Thanks in advance.
