Wondering how to expand the storage. If I put 8tb drives in x 4.. when I go to migration using the old utility, it shows a max of 9tb. Is there a way to change to higher?

How or where would one find instructions on how to reformat a Pegasus3 R6. I'm running into issues with my editing/compositing app not getting along with the Pegasus (based on the logs from my editing app) So...I would like to start from scratch from the array end of things.

I've backed up all the data on the Pegasus just can't see a way to reformat via the new(ish) Utility tool.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi! I'm on a Mac OSX M1 Running Sequoia 15.4.1, i get this messeage that if i update the mac my promise no longer will be supported? And i just tried to update and yes no longer can i mount my Pegasus3 R8!

So i had to downgrade to Sequoia 15.4.1 and that did the trick it works again!

BUT what to do when i eventaually do want to upgrade in the future?

Pegasus3 R6 - Driver crashes constantly

I have a Pegasus3 R6 attached to a brand new Mac Studio(M4 Max, 64GB) macOS Sequoia 15.6 (24G84)

Studio is acting as a homelab server running File Services (SMB & NFS), caching service & Plex Media Server
R6 was disconnecting every day @ 2:16 AM
Only way to recover was to disconnect and reconnect
Rebooting also worked most of the time
I installed the Promise Utility and it started crashing & disconnecting every hour or two
Removed the utility and it's not crashing as often, but it's still happening multiple times a day

Looking at the utility when it was installed, all the arrays/hardware/etc looked good. No errors.

It looks like the driver having issues with SCSIControllerDriverKit on modern Macs while

Promise Pegasus3 - not mounting on Modern Mac?

Dear Promise support,

I’m using a Promise Pegasus3 R8.

Since switching to Apple Silicon Macs, the device hasn’t been functioning properly. I’m currently on an Apple M4 MacBook running macOS 15.3.1 (24D70).

The driver appears to be installed successfully:

What’s strange is that when the Pegasus starts up, I can briefly see and navigate the files, but within a few seconds everything freezes, and I get a "Disk Not Ejected Properly" error. This is very frustrating.

The hardware (including cables and drives) works fine, as I’m able to access the files using an older Intel Core i7 Mac running macOS Monterey 12.3.1 — although it only runs in Safe Mode and doesn’t recognize any USB hard drives.

Any support on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Once this is resolved, I’ll need some guidance on a follow-up problem: after forcefully removing one of the disks out of frustration, I received a “Logical drive set to critical” message. However, I can still access all the data using my old Intel-based MacBook.

I have a R4 24TB (4-TB RAID 5 Mac OS Extended) 16.16 TB free connected Thunderboldt 3 cable to a 16' Macbook Pro M2 MAX, 96 Ram,Sonoma 14.7.4.

I've have been backing up a 555.94 BG Database file and it. It always taking 3 1/2 hour. Tranfering ot the internal SSD on my mac Promise Uitilty Pro (Ver 24.5.7) under Performace shows a 60-68 MB/sec. Why is this transfer going so slooooowwww.

Does anyone know is the current version 5.3.1of Disk Warrior

Pegasus3 R6 doesn't mount at all on Intel Macbook Pro

Hello, all.

I have a 2019 Intel Macbook Pro with Sequoia 15.4.1 and an old Pegasus3 R6 that has never been used on this computer.

I've attempted to download and install all the drivers and firmware as well as the Promise Utility.

The drive doesn't mount, and when I open Promise Utility there is no window or toolbar as it is greyed out in the menu. Disk Utility doesn't see it either.

While there is no powering up of the Pegasus, I do get pass-through power as it keeps my macbook charged.

Any suggestions?

Can't reconfigure RAID

Ive been having trouble with my R3 unmounting briefly during long file transfers. Also having some permissions issues. I copied all media off and looking to reconfigure the RAID. After unlocking the padlock when I go to enable the drives as Unconfigured both radio buttons are greyed out and I can't change them. Again the padlock is unlocked.

We have a new Mac Studio (Sanoma) M3 with 16TB Pegasus3 RAID5. We are connecting using Static IP and SMB Share. We are unable to reliably search the network voulume. It just says nothing found. This happens on all Macs with varying Operating Syetems. It does search on the locally connectd Mac.

I tried to restart the system but could not resolve it. And I tried a different computer, it also showed this error message.

My computer is M4 Max MacBook Pro and M1 Ultra Mac Studio. Both on latest macOS 15.2

I've had a bad firmware update that ran into the Pegasus 3 R6 turning Orange. It's not visible from Promise Utility anymore, still visible on Thunderbolt bus.

How do you solve it (case has been opened) ?

History :

- unpack array,
- upgrade Utility to latest version (4.02.0000.10 (C01))
- firmware upgrade from Utility NEVER finishes
- firmware upgrade from CLI fails, see below.
- Array is not visible anymore.

I have a dead Pegasus 3 R4, and I would prefer not to lose the data I have on the disks. Could anyone confirm if I remove the disks and insert them into another Pegasus 3 R4, if the RAID will be recognized immediately, or if some specific process will be required?

Pegasus32 on Mac Studio - incremental size update possible?

I have a 12TB RAID5 array configured using 4x4TB drives. I need to expand the array to 24TB and want to use 4x8TB drives.

The existing disk is part of a Backblaze backup and, if I delete the disk by creating a completely new array, it adds complications to the backup strategy due to history inheritance etc.

Is it possible to replace an existing 4TB drive with an 8TB drive, wait for the volume to sync/replicate, then do the same for the remaining 3 drives and when all have completed, expand the array size from 12TB to 24TB?

Hi, I cannot eject my Pegasus3 R6 since I updaed from MacOS Ventura to Sequoia 15.1 I installed the latest DEXT driver 21.1.0 and made sure it's enabled by double clicking on it in Applications. I do receive the Force Eject pop-up upon trying to eject (below) stating that other programs programs are using it. I don't have any open apps and/or programs open. I also confirmed that by looking at both my tab bar and using the keyboard shortcut Cmd/Tab. Other than that, everything is loading / opening w/o any issues. I have restarted my 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max several times with the same result. If anyone has any suggestions for a fix, I would sincerely appreciate your input. Thank You. Ray

Pegasus R3 4 compatible with OWC ministack STX

I am trying to conect a OWC ministack STX with a hard drive to the second port of one of my Pegasus R3 4s. The R3 seems to constantly power cycle. If I connect the R3 and STX to seperate ports on my imac 19 2019 they both seem to work fine. I'm suspecting the OWC product is not really thunderbolt 3 compatible.

Anyone done this?

Promise Utility 32-bit App launches but does not display window(s) running macOS 10.14 Mojave

I'm running 10.14 Mojave and I can launch my Promise Utiulity which BTW is a 32-bit application and it will not display any of its windows for my Pegasus R4, Pegasus2 R6 and Pagasus3 R4.

In addition, as it's a 32-bit application Apple states it's not optimized for Mojave and that 32-bit suppoprt will be dropped in future macOS versions.

Promise Pegasus 3 not seen on Mac

I have a new Pegasus 3 24TB drive, and a new Macbook Pro. Sometimes depsite being on, the Pegasus is not seen on Finder. When that happens, I also cannot swith the Pegasus off by depressing the button on the Pegasus. The only way to get the Mac to see the Pegasus, is to unplug the Pegasus' power cord, and then plug it back to restart. I run High Sierra on the Mac.

Normally, if I press the button on the Pegasus, it goes red and then switches off.

I just setup my Pegasus3 for use this week. I began populating it with content from another hard drive, but at some point during the copy procedure, the unit should shut off unexpectedly. This was tracked in the Promise Utility software as well. The first time it happened my computer fell asleep - now I did change my Power Settings such that only the screen fell asleep but not the compter; I was able to get to my laptop fast enough that it was able to resume copying. When I went to the Promise Utility, it had a notification indicating that it could not find the drive, but when I hit Retry it was able to find it.

Then it happened a second time - this time my computer was asleep again (just the screen) but for a longer time, and the hard drive was now completely off and the copy function was completely cancelled.

As I am going to be copying a number of files to this HD, I wanted to ask if there is some sort of sleep setting on the Pegasus3 unit itself that I need to turn off? Is there an issue where I need to even have my screen on all the time? I recall seeing another similar issue on here, where the response was to ensure that the TB3 cables were "securely connected", but mine certainly were.

In that other discussion, I saw that the TB3 cable should be "data-rated". Not sure what this means, but I purchased a Belkin TB3 2m cable for connection:

What is interesting is that this cable is no longer sold at the Apple Store (where I purchased it), so I am wondering could this cable be the source of the connection issue? If so, what would be a recommended cable of 2m length that I can be using for safe data transfer?

Logical Drive "ALIAS" in WINDOW TITLES: Please put the my user-assigned "alias" for into the UI panel for each Pegasus Unit - and use as appropriately where the Promise Untility shows multiple Pegasus units. Background: I am administering 5 Promise Pegasus units from a single Mac. The Promise Utility is nice, but even after years of use, constantly annoying when I pull down the "Window" menu, and see the same model of Pegasus array with (a "-2" or "-3" appended for not very useful or persistant uniqueness). The numbers change, etc. Looking at the windows for each array, also annoyingly ambiguous. I have only one logical array per physical array, so for me, seeing "-AliasHere" appended to window titles, notifications, etc., would be EXTREMELY useful. *IF* it is possible to have more than one alias per physical array, then even just using the 1st alias for this purpose would be very useful I'm sure. "Notifications" would also benefit from

MULTI-UNIT SUPPORT IN GENERAL by Promise Utility: Please integrate multi-Pegasus unit support as a central design feature of Many of us have multiple Promise Pegasus array devices. User Interface for the Promise Utiltiy that recognized and supported multi-unit users would be great - and even better if it supported "Alias" as a way of keeping things organized for me - perhaps a "consolidated dashboard" for multi-unit users. ( Perhaps the left panel of the dashboard could list Units? )Good examples of this kind of UI design include: "Component Update" window for firmware update (currently has no "alias" column however); the new product registration prompt screen, which shows all found arrays and which has an "alias" column. Currently I use a Pegasus2 on PC and Mac, whichever I need at the specific moment, by plugging the Thunderbolt cable from one to the other.

Do I understand correctly, that this is no longer possible with a Pegasus3 where there is a special PC edition? Each edition would work only on that specific OS?

As you already know this is a usb-c raid, so the worflow is with computers that have that port.

Right now I'm using a new MacbookPro, so I have no trouble.

I would like to try it on my iMac though.

Is there any way I can use it with my Thunderbolt 2 Port on my iMac? Without losing that much of transfer speed.

Hello, our Pegasus 3 R8 is connectes to a new Macpro (there is another Pegasus2 connectesd via an USB-C to Thunderbolt Adapter. We like to archive files to LTO, but dur ing this, the Raid gets unmounted. The logfiles say "The system is stopped by host unplug". We have no problems with the Raid used with native Thunderbolt2. The Mac with 10.11.6 has ever sleepmode diabled. I also set the disk spindown in the promise utility to zero.
We appreciate any tipps and tricks ;-))

Is there any issue connecting a Promise3 RAID to a Thunderbolt 3 cable having a Thunderbolt 2 adapter, connected to a Mac Mini (having Thunderbolt 2)? I am trying to have RAID support for both a Thunderbolt 3 (MacBook Pro & iMacPro) & Thunderbolt 2 (Mac Mini) environment.

What's confusing is that https://thunderbolttechnology.net/tech/faq indicates "solutions and products built to Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 specifications will work with Thunderbolt 3 via an adapter"

However, Promise3 documentation indicates:

1. The Pegasus3 can only be used with client devices equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port
It CANNOT be connected to a Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 1 port." That would suggest that the Mac Mini could not support a Promise3 product under any circumstances.

2. "Before you connect Pegasus3 to your computer, make sure the computer has the most recent Thunderbolt 3 driver installed (while the Mac Mini has only a Thunderbolt 2 port).

Just wondering, I have the Pegasus 3 R8 installed and working fine. I am just curious, I am working on my Mac and I am not accessing elements on the drive but it continues to do stuff? All drives are showing they are active and doing something? What is that. It doesn't appear to stop. Do I have a setting wrong?

New Pegasus3 R6 - errors on first boot

I've got a Pegasus2 r8 so I am familular with the utulity etc.

I just picked up a new Pegasus3 R6. I plug it in, start it up... I see two red x's right away in the utility.

One in Voltage and if mousec over.. it says :

Enclosure 1

Voltage1: OK

Voltage 2: OK

Voltage 3: Critical

Then I see a red x beside Temperature.

If moused over:

Temperature 1: Critical

Temperature 2: Normal

Is it necessary to wait for synchronization to complete following a change in RAID format?

I'm changing my shiny new Pegasus3 R8 80 from RAID5 to RAID6. (I want the extra redundancy.) That's done. But it is synchronizing now, and from previous experience with Pegasus2 units, I know this can take 70+ hours. But looking at the manual, I see the option exists to control the amount of resources spent on synchronization vs. read/write actions. Does that mean I can immediately start copying files to my newly configured drive? Is there any reason to wait (such as reduced fragmentation), if immediate use is possible?

Hello there.

I have the same issue some people are getting here, I have seen no solution so here is my case.

I've got this "Promise Technology Pegasus3 R6 Mac Edition 24TB 6-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (6 x 4TB)".

I've tried mounting it on a Macbook Pro 2017 15" on it's usb-c ports with no success.

I have treid downloading every single driver from the support page, even though the firmware is getting me in trouble, becasue it says "Image not recognized" (image attached), so I have not been able to install.

The Promise Utility works though, but it shows no signal from the Hard drive.

The button is always red.

This is all the information I have so far!

Hello everyone,

I just got my new Pegasus 3 R8 64TB and after updating the Promise Utility and installing the driver for TB2 Connectivity i connected it and it powers up but then does not do anything.

I have 3 Pegasus 2 R8 already and remember that when initializing them it would start working on its own for a few hours with the blue lights flashing.

Now I am not sure wether the Pegasus3 initializes without this flashing or not, but there is no sound from running HDs as well.

Did anyone experience the same problem.

I have it connected to a Mac Book Pro 17 Inch, 2,2 GHz i7 with Yosemite (10.10.5) running.

Connected thru the original TB3 to TB2 Adapter from Apple.

Any advice is very welcome.

I have a Pegasus3 R4 with brand new drives where I'd like to know the possibliites of success creating a APFS logical drive with encryption and if this has been tested on Promises's end and is known to work and be stable.

Per a FAQ at Apple's APFS guide here:

Apple File System does not directly implement software RAID; however APFS-formatted volumes can be combined with an Apple RAID volume to support Striping (RAID 0), Mirroring (RAID 1), and Concatenation (JBOD). APFS-formatted volumes can also be used with direct-attached hardware RAID solutions.

What does this mean for RAID 5 as this is the type of RAID I'd like to set up with APFS encryption.

Client has Mac Mini Late 2014 with original Pegasus 1 R6. That unit is geting old and we want to replace with a Pegasus 3 R6. We want to wait and see what Apple does in 2018 to refresh the Mini and Pro Macs.

So, will this work with a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter?

In the Pegasus "Compatibility List" the Mac Mini is not listed. So I thought I'd better check.

I will keep this short and sweet.

Prior to the Windows 10 FORCED creators update:

X-99 A ii Motherboard

ASUS Thunderbolt EX iii Card

Pegasus 3 R8 48TB TB3 RAID

Everything working fine.

I was prompted to update upon shutdown last week for an "update", not realizing it was this "Creators" update. R8 does not boot with CPU what so ever now. Thunderbolt is recognized in BIOS, and all settings are the same prior to Windows update.

Windows is just not seeing the R8 now.

Thoughts? As I have been tinkering all day and haven't had any luck.

I've rolled back to the previous Windows build with no luck either.

Hi Promise,

I am interested in purchasing the Pegasus3 R4 Mac edition (that I was told works on both Mac and PC - which is important for my setup that it can work on both).

I took a good close look at the compatibility list and see you've tested drives ranging from 1-10TB in capacity successfully.

However, I'm interested in purchasing 4 12TB Western Digital Gold Enterprise Class hard drives and knowing these work will work in the Pegasus 3 R4 (link below).

How long would the turnaround time be to get your product testing team in Taiwan (I was told on phone support that's where they are located) to test these particular drives out and confirm compatiiblity?

Is there any reason why these drives shouldn't/wouldn't work in the Pegasus3 R4?

Hi Promise,

I posted a recent thread inquiring as to possibility of 4x12TB Western Digital Enterprise class drives working as a 36TB logical drive in RAID 5 on Pegasus3 R4. Link to forum thread here.

Unfortunately, you haven't yet posted these drives in your compatibility sheet. However, I would really like to get this working with these drives if it's possible and want to share how far I got and get some engineering/technical feedback.

In short summary, the drives and capacities were recognized fine, disk array and logical drive were created successfully, synchronization process went through in full, but when that was over, I noticed no logical drive had mounted to my desktop nor was any logical drive showing up in Apple's Disk Utility.

I could not find any reported errors either.

I created an eventlog and saved out a subsysteminfo.html file as I've seen advised here on the forms and not sure how to attach here, but will be calling tech support to see what they can tell me by pointing them to this thread. In the meantime, any other tech support, thanks for looking over and helping me understand any thoughts as to why the logical drive didn't mount and what to try differently another time around as I think maybe I just missed a step or detail when I tried this the first time around per advice from a Promise tech support person by phone.

New Promise3 R4 12TB - With Each New Logical Drive Creation, One New Drive is Marked Dead

I have a brand new Pegasus3 R4 12TB. The first time I started it up, everything looked fine, but when I started to put some files on it, I immediately got a "Critical, Major" error for PD3 in slot #4 that the disk was marked "Dead" for a bad sector or sectors. I bought a new 3TB HDD (in fact I bought two, just in case), and replaced the dead HDD. I restarted the P3 and everything looked fine; tested it all out and all seemed copasetic. I used the automatic function to create a disk array with one logical disk using RAID5, just like the original factory setup. Immediatly after the initialization was complete, I got a "Critical, Major" error that PD2 in slot #3 was marked "Dead" for bad sectors.

This seems more than simply coincidence, and I'm not going to burn another hard drive just to keep testing this out. I don't have the first dead HDD as I sent it back to Apple for a replacement, but I'm thinking about pulling this 'Dead' disk and checking it in a separate drive reader I have to see if there really are that many bad sectors on it, and if they can be repaired with one of my disk utility programs.

Has anyone else experienced dead disks that were basically DOA once a logical drive began to run on your Pegasus3, but only one at a time, in sequence? How did you resolve the issue, other than just returning the HDD one at a time back to where you bought the P3 chassis from originally? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Driver not unloaded issue on Win10

I am using Macbook pro with Belkin USB-C dock. I use it for several months without any issue.

But recently it shows some drivers can not be loaded successfully due to unsufficient PCIe resource.

I tried to debug it and I found it only happen if I connect Pegasus 3 before this Belkin dock.

Even though I already remove the Pegasus3 device, it still can not load Belkin dock driver successfully.

I have to reboot it and everything shows okay. So I think the Pegasus3 driver is not unloaded when it is removed.

Can it be fixed?

I am using Pegasus3 R8 on Macbook Pro running Windows 10.

In the user manual, it says I should press the power button to shutdown Pegasus3 after safe removed the USB storage device.

When I safe remove USB storage device on Win10 and unplug the USB-C cable, the Pegasus3 device will also shotdown. Is it safe to do it so?

Is it necessary to press power button for shutdown? Or direct unplug it is safe?
