Pegasus R4 connect with MacBook Pro Nov 2023

I haven't used my Pegasus R4 for a while, and the Utility management does not support my new MacBook. Where can I find the compatible version of Promise Utility Pro and connect to my MacBook?

Thanks.

Pegasus Gen 1 firmware update, MacOS 10.12.6

I have two Pegasus 1 drives set up as RAID5, and would like to update the firmware so that I can run a later operating system, specifically 13.7.8 Ventura. I've read several posts here, and have tried to put together how to do this. I can get the drive to mount using Thunderbolt 2 cables to a MacBook Pro running 10.12.6. I have tried mounting it on an iMac running 10.13.6, it won't mount. I ran the utility on the iMac, and it says the drive has the latest firmware. If there is a post that could walk me through getting the drive to mount on the iMac running 13.7.8, using a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 cable/USB-C, I'd appreciate the help.

Quick thank you to the Promise team

Good afternoon everybody. I will keep this brief, but I wanted to make an account to give a thank you to the Pegasus team, particularly Babatunde Akinkuolie for the excellent, thorough documentation on the knowledge base site for legacy Pegasus products, particularly here and here.

I have been a long-time Pegasus user, and still have my original Pegasus R4 from over a decade ago. While my wife and I were decluttering the house, I stumbled across the R4 and decided to see if I could use it as a secondary backup solution. I installed a couple of spare drives I had, and managed to scrounge up a Thunderbolt 2 cable and adapter to use with my M4 Mac. Using the Promise KB articles, I was able to successfully update the firmware on my old Pegasus and was happy to find that it still worked just as well as it had when I bought it back in 2011. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the new Pegasus software is backwards compatible with legacy hardware, and even more happy that Promise maintains documentation for users with legacy hardware.

So glad that the old R4 will have a new life alongside my Pegasus32. Cheers to the Promise team for the excellent documentation and support - you have a loyal customer for life.

Pegasus r4 and Mac Studio - Two drives dead

Hello,

I have an old Pegasus R4 unit connected to a Mac Studio. All drives are almost new. Replaced a few months ago after a dead drive problem. Now I have a Raid5 configuration and a few days ago I found my unit with 2 dead drives. I try to attach a few screenshots.

Any suggestion, any hope I can recover my data?

Thank you, Cristiano

Advice for adding new computer to 2013 R6

I have a constantly used R6 bought with, and still used with, a 2013 Mac Pro ("trash can"). The Mac Pro is no longer reliable and I want to buy a new computer easily used with the R6. I was told that the Studio would not work with the old R6. I'm a photographer with limited computer skills ... would it be practical to hook a new Mac Mini to the old R6?

Thanks

Promise Pegasus R6 Slot 6 keeps on failing drives

Since the beginning of the year, I’ve had three WD Purple 4TB drives fail in Slot 6 of my Pegasus system. All were used but had 100% health and were not heavily utilized. I don’t use the Pegasus as frequently as before, typically running it for 8–16 hours per week. Could this indicate a problem with Slot 6, or is there a broader issue with the system? Or am i just super duper unlucky to get 3 bad drives in a row

one thing to note , i oddly remember this happening to my R4 as well.. is there anyway to diagnose if its unlucky dying drives or issues w the SATA port in the R6 or the internal SAS RAID Card

Pegasus1 R6 on 2011 Mac Mini with macOS 15

TL;DR - Pegasus1 R6 latest firmware with macOS 15.2 via OCLP on 2011 Mac Mini is not seen by the Utility.

A bit of an odd one perhaps. Background - I had a Pegasus R6 gen1 connected to a 2011 Mac MIni Server running macOS X 10.5 for a lot of years and it was just about out of space. I had a 2012 Mac Mini that was no longer being used - so I did some upgrades on it and bought a used Pegauss R6 gen1 with double the size drives (and had to update its firmware). The highest supported macOS I could get that Mini to run is 10.15.7.

On to the 2011 I used Open Core Legacy Patcher to upgrade to macOS 15.2 - and I got the Pegasus to mount by applying some updates. However, I cannot get any verison of the Utiltiy to see the array. I have tried versions from 4.0.something all the way through 24.5.7 and the newer Utility versions just don't see it - and the old ones lock up and have to be forced off.

I was able to get it recognized by the Utility 24.5.7 while running macOS 12.7.4 after running the driver 6.2.17-3.

The computer runs well enough on 15.2 that I'd prefer to do that - but if my only option is to run an older OS in order to use all the functionality of my Pegasus1 R6 - then I will ahve to do that.

I do have two internal drives in that system - so I may also try macOS 13 and 14 to see what the higest level macOS I can get to cooperate.

It seems odd that the newest softwre runs and can see the array on the older OS - but not the newer one. So I am not sure if the ocmbinaton of OS and Utility and Driver are the issue - or if the use of Open Core Legacy Patcher is part of the issue.

Pegasus R6 compatibility with M2 Pro Mac mini?

I currently have a Pegasus R6 with 6x4TB drives connected by a Thunderbolt 1 cable to a 2012 Mac mini running Mojave 10.14.6. The volume is seen as being 16TB by macOS.

Everything is working fine (outside of unplanned power outages during the L.A. wildfires) and so I'm a bit loathe to touch anything, but this Mac and the OS are a bit long in the tooth at this point.

If I bought an M2 Pro Mac mini, would I still be able to use the Promise with it? Assuming the M2 comes with macOS Sonoma or Sequoia. I'm assuming I would need an Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 cable/adapter, and hope it Just Works™️ with the Thunderbolt 3 port on the M2.

Are there any other issues? Would my existing Promise Utility work with it? Or would it require a newer version or some other software to manage the RAID with? I see references to "DEXT"s in some posts, but I'm not familiar with it.

~~~
BTW I wish I could upgrade to a Pegasus32 R6 unit (since it has Thunderbolt 3 to match the M2's TB3 ports), but even empty ones go for $1,400 on eBay!  :-O  I also have a 6-bay Synology NAS that only cost half that much ...
I have a Pegasus R6 which is not showing up as a connected device in Promise Utility or Disk Utilty. The power light is orange, while all the drive led lights are blue. The R6 does react when I connect the thunderbolt, with the bue thunder icon turning on, but that's it. Can I put the R6 by the trash or is the something I can do to give it a second life???
Power Saving Mode in old R6
I have 4 of the original first generation R6 units. All are updated with the latest firmware.  I get event notifications for one of the 4 units showing changes in power saving mode from active to idle to standby to stopped, and of course it takes time to spin it back up again when I want to access the drive. This is a unit I purchased used and it's always done this.  The other 3 don't do this and are always immediately available.  I'm assuming there is a setting somewhere that differs from my other 3 units, but I can't for the life of me find where it is.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
Command times out on physical disk repeatedly
I have two Pegasus R4 thunderbolt RAIDS connected to my iMac 5K retina 4Ghz Intel Core i7.
Both of my RAID's are near ful. Just under 200GB of space on each RAID. I have been working with this margin for years.
I use the RAID for video editing and I am constantly taking media off to free up space for new projects.
This month I am getting very slow response playing back video in FCPX 10.4 - I thought it was the new FCPX slowing things down but I cannot confirm this on boards.
Is there a problem using the Pegasus with FCPX 10.4 and OSX 10.12.6 ??
I am in the process of freeing up space on the RAID but I wanted to know what I could check to make this work.
The untility for the R4's is giving my a "Command times out on physical disk" warning regularly.
Any insight is helpful.
Pegasus R6 (Series 1) makes explorer.exe hang around 12% CPU usage when plugged in.
Hi,
I have been using two Pegasus R6 Series 1 units for some years on a  Windows 7 x64 based computer with no problems until now.
When I start the computer with the devices powered on, they make explorer.exe process almost hang with a constant 12-13% CPU usage, rendering Windows unusuable, applications hanging, Recycle Bin impossible to open, and I can't access my files on the Pegasus drives.
They used to work perfectly fine for years and I have not changed anything to the configuration of the machine, applications, drivers or OS, but the problem suddenly showed up out of the blue three weeks ago, without any major update before it whatsoever.
When I start the computer without the Pegasus drive attached, it runs perfectly fine without any od the problems described.
Both Pegasus units are running perfectly fine on Mac OS X, and are in perfect conditions according to the Pegasus Utility. All LED indicators are blue. Both Unit never moved from the shelf they are stored on neither ever had any physical incident.
I did have to replace a failing hard drive in one of the unit once, followed the Promise procedure and replaced it with success, further running and using the unit without any problem for a whole year till this one arose.
Each unit is connected on a separate thunderbolt port on a Gigabyte Z77x-UP5-TH motherboard running its latest Bios version (F12)
The PC is running Windows 7 64 Ultimate with all the latest important and recommanded Windows Updates and latest Promise Windows driver R_WinDrv_Installer_V6.2.0.6_WHQL
Both units are running latest Promise Firmware (R_SI_5.04.000061)
I have performed partition and filesystem check on both system which went successful and showed no errors.
Could you please help me, they are my work drives and I totally feel helpless and desperate.
Can an RG be used on windows platform
My apologies if this is a stupid question but I am not a Mac person. Last year our office became a Windows house (long story) and while doing some digital clean up I came across 2 legacy R6's. (16 TB each). After we pull the data off of them via one of the old Macs (that data is going in the cloud), is there a way to be able to use them as external drives to our windows server or is it not with the effort? If so, does anyone make a firewire to USB A 3.0 adaptor or hub?
Thanks.
Greetings to everyone. My backplane in Pegasus r6 decided to fire up. I don't know the reason but it happened. So I'm looking for a new one now. I'm sure that motherboard is ok, because I've installed the backplane from another pegasus1 r6 and it works perfectly but I've returned that back to my friend..
I use 2 Pegasus1 R4 divers mounted on a MacPro. I was working with an R4 drive and I stopped the program.
R6 with 2 5TB partitions, can they be combined?
My R6 was partitioned into 2 5TB drives, is there anyway to delete the 1 partiton and add the newly freed up 5TB INTO the other existing partition without deleting everything and reformatting?
I don't can't lose everything on the other drive, and don't have time to copy/reformat/restore as this is used by the finance department of my job as theor shared storage.
Pegasus R6 won't mount with drives installed, utility won't open. Show in utility without drives,
Hello there I'm new to using the pegasus r6. I recently purchased a Pegasus R6 with 12TB of storage on Ebay. When I connect it to my Macbook Pro it doesnt show up as a device. Also the Utility application will not display anything. The power Button stays orange and cannot power down the system. I have been searching online for an answer to my issue with no luck. I decided to unplug the power and remove the drives then reconnect and power back up. This time the power light starts orange then turns blue. And the Utility will open. I'm not sure what the previous owner did with the drives or what I can do to make the unit recognize them. Any help would be greatly appreciated, its an original Pegasus R6 connected via Thunderbolt to a Macbook Pro Retina 2.8ghz i7 with 16GB of RAM running OSX 10.13.2, I was able to download the laterst firmware and update the unit and that didnt help. I've also been able to save the subsysteminfo file. Help please.
Pegasus R6 RAID-System – trouble
Hello,
"Pegasus R6" RAID-System was running for years
– and now suddenly it is totally confusing and frustrating.
It started with the fact that one could not access "suddenly"
A plate in the RAID lights red, but that alone may not mean a "total failure", right?
- At the moment, it either does not appear on the network at all
or
- appears, but I can not access
or
- I can access, but nothing to copy
I have already replaced the "red" hard disk with an other one
and started a "rebuild" manually. But that seems to hang up...
Could someone here kindly take a look at my "Promise Utility - Service Report" ?
I do not know how to continue.
Hi, since 3 days our Pegasus R4 doesn't come online on our os x server running under MAC OS High Sierra 10.13.2 and os x server 5.4. It started 5 days ago when he didn't connect during automatic startup process in the morning. After restarting the server Pegasus appeared in finder and we could work without problems. 2 days later he didn't connect even after server restart and I can't find a way to resolve this. Firmware and Promise Utility are on the actual level.
R6 12 TB went offline after Disk Failure
Hi
I had a disk failure and the Pegasus went offline. I cannot access any more. However I have had configured Raid 5 and one Spare Drive. So shouldn't the Pegaus continue running and start rebuild with teh spare drive? I do not understand why it is no longer accesible.
What to do?
Thanks, Reinhard
Promise not mounting
Hi,
My Pegasus R4 is no longing mounting on a mac, worked two days ago with no issues. I did lose a disk last week and inserted a new drive, and run a rebuild. Used fine for a day or two after the rebuild. Then unit was not in use for the weekend, and come in Monday and the drive would not mount probably (mac beach ball). After restarting, the unit does not show up at all.  Via disk utility, the drive is marked as full with no space to spare. I dumped 250GB at the end of last week so there should be no issues.
System status shows all green ticks. Having read on the forum a possible fix would be to update to the latest firmware, which I have and has not solved my issue.
Can anyone help?
Long rebuild time
All,
I have a Pegasus R6 with 6x3TB drives set to RAID6. Approx 8 TB of data stored on 18 TB available space.Two drives failed. I replaced one drive and restarted the box. A warning appeared on first reboot where I had to Accept that the array is no longer redundant and it need to be rebuilt, as one might expect. I started the rebuild but under the Background Activities tab, Rebuild says there are no available drives to rebuild and no progress bar shows. There is a fast-flashing yellow/orange? LED on the new drive and all other drives seemed to be alive with dancing blue LEDs at first so it appeaed the rebuild was working. THen all other good drives seemed to have calmed thier LEDs to steady blue (new drive still fast flashing bright). but it is still showing "degraded/rebuilding" under the Array tab three days later. Is this normal?
One detail that may be pertinent is that I wanted to move away from the problemeatic Seagate drives in favor of WD Reds. THe Reds are 5400 RPM. I know that's not best practice to mix 7200 and 5400 rpm drives but i want to slowly migrate them all.
R4 drive replacement
I have a Pegasus series 1 R4 8TB (4x 2TB) running w a 2017 iMac . One of the Pegasus Toshiba HDD's died last year, and I replaced it with a Seagate barracuda 2TB drive. Worked fine for about 8months. This has now failed as well. I may be able to replace with the barracuda warranty, but I am also wondering if I might upgrade all 4 drives. So 2 questions, please.
1: I know if I replace 1 bay  w a larger HDD (eg 3TB) the Pegasus unit will only recognise the larger drive as if it was a 2TB drive. will this still be the case if I replace all 4 drives with a larger capacity disk?
2: is there an SSD drive that I can swap the disk drives with. The Pegasus compatibility chart seems to suggests that "traditional " disks are the only things I can use.
Thanks for any advice.
How to replace swap out 3TB drives for 4TB drives when a RAID 1 drive has failed
I have a Pegasus R4 with 2 pairs of 3TB drives each in a RAID 1 mirror configuration. I thus have two separate volumes each of 3TB mounted on my desktop:
3TB Volume 1
- DISK 1 (3TB) & DISK 2 (3TB) in a RAID 1 configuration
3TB Volume 2
- DISK 3 (3TB) & DISK 4 (3TB) in a RAID 1 configuration
DISK2 has failed. The volume is still in tact and mounted, although I've since physically removed the dead drive from the slot. I want to take this opportunity to increase the volume size by replacing DISK1 & DISK 2 both with 4TB drives. However, I want to preserve the data in the process. Is that possible? This is what I'm hoping I can do:
1) Convert the current RAID 1 configured Volume 1 into a standalone drive (in other words, no RAID)
2) Insert a new 4TB drive into the defective drive slot
3) Create a new 4TB volume from the new 4TB drive
4) Mount the new 4TB drive and copy the contents from the existing 3TB volume to this new 4TB volume
5) Replace DISK1 with a new 4TB drive
6) Mirror DISK1 to DISK2 to create a new RAID1 volume and allow the rebuild/sync to complete
Is this even possible? Am I going about this the right way? What happens when I install the new 4TB DISK2? I don't want it to automatically re-build as a replacement for the failed 3TB DISK2. Wat's the correct way to do what I'm trying to do?
Pegasus1 R6 Firware update stuck at 99% then Promise Utility crashed
We've got several Pegasus R6 units. Today I updated the Promise Utility to version 4.00.0000.08. Once that version was installed I received new firmware updates (5.04.0000.61) for the Pegasus units. The units are now running 5.04.0000.57.
On a Mac Mini mid 2011 running 10.10.5 we've two R6 units connected.
I started by updating only one R6 unit to the latest firmware version on that Mac Mini. What happened is that the firmware update gets stuck at 99% - Updating Image. It stayed there for more than an hour. While the firmware update was stuck at 99% I navigated in the Promise Utility to Check for Updates. Next thing that happened, Promise Utility crashed & quited.
I've now restarted the Promise Utility and have restarted the Firmware update. Again it's stuck at 99%.
In the Console the following log entry gets repeated every 10 seconds:
23/08/17 11:06:04,448 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.promise.BGPMain_R[4638]) Service exited due to signal: User defined signal 1: 30
I'm afraid that the R6 will be bricked when I turn off or power cycle it. What's the best action to take at this moment without bricking the R6?
Mac OS X Will Not Mount Pegasus R4 After a Failed Physical Disk Replacement
Recently, I had a hard disk failure in my Pegasus R4 (first generation) RAID5-configured disk array. The fourth of four drives failed. Per the Pegasus R4/R6 Compatibilty List available on the Promise Technology site, I purchased the following compatible hard disk:
Toshiba DT01ACA100, 1 TB, 6 Gb/s transfer rate, 64 MB buffer size, 7200 RPM
It replaces the original Hitachi HDS721010DLE630, 1 TB, 6 Gb/s transfer rate, 64(?) MB buffer size, 7200 RPM disk drive. Promise Technology informed me that mixing and matching drives from different manufacturers and with (potentially) different buffer sizes has no impact on the Pegasus R4's ability to function properly. Since I used a hard disk on the compability list, I felt confident that no issue would arise after replacing the failed disk drive.
Once Installed I went through the process of manually rebuidling the replacement drive. Promise Technology confirmed that I would incur no data loss, since the disk array is set up with RAID5 and that the rebuild process would populate the replacement hard drive with the RAID5 parity bit data necessary for data redundancy. With RAID5 in a 4-disk configuration, one drive can fail without the impact of data loss. After the drive failed and up this point, where I replaced it, I made no attempt to execute neither read nor write operatoins on the disk array, even though I was informed that read operations are safe.
After installing the replacement disk drive, I ran the Promise Utility application, and the dashboard reported green in every dashboard item listed under 'System Status'. Unfortunately, my Macbook Pro's OS no longer 'sees' the Pegasus R4 logical disk drive; it does not appear on the desktop. Of course, I first tried checking Finder Preferences to ensure the 'external disks' option was checked. As I suspected this was not the cause, since I have other external drives that are mounted and reported on the desktop. Next, I ran Apple's Disk Utility application, selected the 'PROMISE PEGAGUS' volume, and clicked on the 'Mount' button at the top of the Disk Utilitiy application window. Disk Utility reported the following error:
"Mount failed: The disk 'PROMISE PEGASUS' could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting."
At this point I am hesitant to proceed without some reassurances. Will running 'First Aid' in any way cause data loss on my RAID5 disk array? Are there any safe 'First Aid' operations I can perform without jeopardizing my existing data?
Here are specs on my MacbookPro:
Retina, Mid 2012
2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10.5)
Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Does Promise Pegasus 1 R6 support 10TB HDDs?
I have a Pegasus R6 with 6x2 TB Hitachi hard drives.  Recently I had to replace one drive.
I would like to have much more capacity in this unit than the 8 TB (RAID 6) configuration I have now.
Your Pegasus1 compatibility list does not list anything larger than a 4 TB drive.  :-(
It seems unfair that I can only double my current capacity, that I cannot buy these 10 TB drives to get 60 TB of raw capacity/40 TB RAID 6.  I have no need for Thunderbolt 2 or 3 speeds in my home setup.  The 4 TB drives in your Pegasus1 compatibility list are of limited availability these days.
How about certifying some more recent disks in your older products??
These units cost quite a bit of money, I do not feel like I should have to buy an entire new unit (that I cannot afford) just to get larger capacity disks.  (For example, there was an amazing sale on Hitachi 10 TB drives a few days ago that I could not take advantage of.)
If we absolutely cannot use 8 or 10 TB drives, the compatibility list for the Pegasus2 R6 lists the Toshiba MD04ACA600 6 TB drive.  Is that same drive likely to work fine in the Pegasus1 R6?  Even if it is too 'new' to be included in the Pegasus1 compatibility list?
Thanks in advance for your answer.
Pegasus R6 freezes Mac Mini running Sierra 10.12.5
This started happening sometime ago but now got to the point where it's absolutely unworkable. I'm running Mac OS Server 5.3.1 on Mac Mini with Sierra 10.12.5. I have installed the latest driver, firmware and utility software for this Pegasus R6. Nothing helps. If I have Pegasus connected to the Mini and restart teh computer it stays in a working condition for about 10 minutes and then Server stops working I can't open any applications on the Mini at all. If I disconnect the Thunderbolt cable from the Pegasus then the computer runs without any issues. As I said it started happening about a month ago. I used to have to restart the computer a coupe of times a day. But now I have to keep restaring it constantly. I need to have this file server working! I have over 100 people depending on it! I reinstalled Mac OS on the Mini already, and no more updates are available for the Pegasus.
Pegasus R6 dead drive due to removal
Hello
I have had the P1 R6 running great for a couple of years. Drive 4 turned red...with an error indication saying drive marked dead due to removal. I remounted the drive and it was able to be rebuilt and was good for a day or so. Then it was marked dead again. Ok so I got two new approved drives for backup. I swapped out Drive 4 and rebuilt assuming the original drive truly dead. Worked fine for a week and then the same marked dead due to removal error. Tried a third replacement and same result.
Last week Drive 2 (Array0 No.1) on my R6 failed/dead. I dont have any drives set as spare, using all 6 in RAID5 (10TB)
I just installed a replacment drive but when I attempt to rebuild 'Array0 Seq No1 : 2 TB' not Target Physical Drive is available. I am, instead,  given the following message "There is no data to submit".
I have checked the Pysical Drive List and slot 2 is not in the list at all. On the device, slot 2 has a solid blue light on.
Please could you advise how I can get the drive to appear in the PD list and then rebuild the dead drive.
Pegasus R4 ejects on sleep after upgrade to 10.12
Hi there,
I recently upgraded my Mac OS to 10.12.
Now my legacy Pegasus R4 ejects itself when my MacBook Pro goes to sleep.
I updated the R4's firmware before the move to 10.12 -- it's running: 5.04.0000.61, Dec 2016.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Pegasus R6 12 TB freeze MAC Mini
Hello Support Team,
Table for Compatibility of 1TB drives for Pegasus 1 R6 confusing
I experienced a physical drive failure on my R6 RAID 5 and went to replace it. Not wanting to get the wrong drive, I checked with the table you provided to see those that are compatible because this is the first drive failure I have had since I have been running a RAID 5 for over 6 years now. The list first shows Hitachi drives with #1 being a 1TB and having a 32 MB buffer. In fact, it is the ONLY drive on the entire list that has a 32MB buffer, but it is no longer in production. So I bought the only other 1TB drive on the list, which is #8, a Toshiba with all the same attributes as the original Hitachi 1TB, EXCEPT it has a 64MB buffer.
I started the rebuild tonight following instructions provided by Promise, but I realize it will likely run until morning. My question is this: Am I going to see a good rebuild completed tomorrow or a mess because of the different buffer sizes? And if it does not rebuild, are there ANY 1TB drives out there that will fit into my RAID 5 flawlessly? I should not have to buy a whole new set because one drive failed, right?
P.S. It has already been running 45 minutes and still shows 0% on the progress bar. I'm hoping that is because it first must "format" the new drive for its participation in the RAID 5?
Thx, ~Pam
R6 is incredibly slow
I have a Pegasus R6, I think it's the first iteration of it.
I'm running it in RAID 5 - 10TB logical drive size.
It used to be lightning but now it's taking over 10 hours to copy 1Tb to my Macs SSD!!!
There are events coming up in the utility saying PD6 has minor issues and is timing out. Then the info says drive restarted???
See attached screenshot.
Should I be replacing this disk and rebuilding? The blue lights are still on though?
I tried to register it and submit a support case but it was insanely complex so I'm asking for some help here.
Bad sector is found on physical disk
Drive 3 failed: Hitachi  HDS723020BLA642, 2TB drive.
Am I requited to replace this with the exact same drive or can I upgrade the drive from the Approved list on the PDF?  Can I keep the other drives in the array 2TB and upgrade the one to 4TB with the intention of swapping in 4TB's in the future for the rest of the array?
R4 Not Responding - URGENT
I've had a hard drive fail on my 2011 Pegasus R4.   Pegasus R4 4 TB (4x1TB SATA) RAID System.  Configured as Raid 5.
It has been working well with my system which is 10.6.8.   The drives are Hitachi HDs72101.
I sent Promise Support a subsystem report.   They confirmed that Drive #2 has died and needs to be replaced.  OK, not a problem.  I can do that.
However I've hit a new problem.  Here's where I'm at now.  This is what I need help with.
On Thursday our time (it's Friday now)  I tried to back up all of the data from my Pegasus onto a spare drive.   I set the transfer up.   It was going to take 30 hours but it was working.
After 3 hours Finder crashed (due to an unrelated event) and transfer stopped.   The Pegasus was fine - it was still working, but I decided to move both drives to a spare computer to avoid having Finder crash again.
At this point the Pegasus was showing Drives 1, 3, and 4 as two blue lights.  Drive 2 was a red-light on top.
I powered down and physically moved the Pegasus to be near the spare computer.   I then powered it up.    Now, the red light on drive 2 is gone.  It's blue again.   All 4 drives are showing solid blue lights on top and a flickering blue lights on the bottom.
However the Pegasus will not mount on the new computer (mac 10.12.4) or an another older machine (10.6.8).   I even tried to set it back up on my main machine which it has been working with for the last 4 months and it would not mount.
My question is, is it possible while moving the Pegasus I somehow started the platter moving on drive #2 again and now the Pegasus is re-indexing itself?   The blue lights have been flickering now for about 16 hours.   Is it possible that at some point in the near future it will finish indexing and mount to the computer it's now plugged into (10.12.4)?
I keep my important photos on the pegasus (our son's baby photos through to age 5) and many other work documents.   It is essential I get the data back.
Updating Queries
Hi all. This hopefully is pretty basic to resolve, but as I am a film editor I always get nervous doing updates and could not swim my way through all the old help centre reams of technoinfo.
so ..
1. I have switched iMacs and dont have the promise Utility anymore. Download site? I downloadeda 2013 version but on installation it said its too old and might corrupt the system.
2. I want to take out and store my drives and replace them all for a large music festival i create the films for over 5 huge days and nights. Here is last years batch for a bit of light relief:
https://vimeopro.com/browndog/bluesfest-2016-dailies
Firstly i assume you must keep them in the same order from top to bottom.  Once taken out, where is the best place to store the drives? Cant just leave them lying around. Can you get a good storeage case on the market?
3. It currently is setup for editing so I assume the drives are at 7500rpm. No utitlity on this machine as mentioned do cnnot see. So is the R6 capable of using 3tb or 4tb ddrives? I located this compatabilty test document   file:///Users/editing/Downloads/Pegasus+R4_R6+Compatibility+List+v1.17-20160311.pdf and its didnt make any sense to me.
4. Finally, once the drives are replaced, I guess the disk utility from Promise will format and array them as i want.
Thanks for considering all thse basic issues and i hope someone can help.
Hey all - having a problem updating my drive array.  If I go to the utility and check for updates, it says I need to update to 5.04.0000.57.  When I confirm and flash, it reverts to the 5.04.0000.36.  I have read others have had this problem and have manually downloaded the update but I cannot find it anywhere.
Does anyone knoe where the 5.04.0000.57 update can be located?
Or
Is there a more current update I should use from the downloads page?
I am still on Mavericks.
Can empty enclosure be filled without original drive carriers?
I bought this empty Pegasus R6 enclosure a few days ago at Afuture's webshop in the Netherlands (see picture above). I did not know it was empty as it was not depicted like this. Is it possible to use HDD's without the original drive carriers and if so, which brands and how would one insert them? Thanks in advance
Are compatible drive lists for just Pegasus2 units or also Pegasus1 units?
Looked for a previous post on this, but didn't find one.
We have a Pegasus1 R6 that we'd like to upgrade with larger drives, but can only find current compatibility lists. I'm assuming the current lists are for Pegasus2 units, but if our Pegasus1 is up to date with firmware, will the same drives be compatible?
Large drive support on Pegasus1 R4
Hi,
I've learned from the Pegasus2 forum that 6TB Toshiba drives were supported on Pegasus2 units.http://forum.promise.com/thread/large-drive-support/
Since latest versions of both Promise utility and Pegasus firmware apply equally to Pegasus1 and Pegasus2 units, are there any chance that the above-mentioned 6TB Toshiba drives MD044ACA600 will also work in a Pegasus1 unit ?
We own 2 Pegasus1 P4, running since 3 years now without a hitch, loaded each with 4 Hitachi HDS72404 4TB drives (RAID5 logical drive of 12TB).
Many thanks in advance.
Pegasus 1 migrated RAID 5, Logical Drive 9TB, Disk Utility cannot increase partition size
Had Pegasus1 R4, (1TB X 4). Migrated RAID to 9TB (3TB X 4). Promise Utility sees a 9TB Logical Drive, but Disk Utility fails (after many hours) to increase the partition size to utilize the additional space. Drive Utility seems to think it can do this, bt then it acts buggy.
One web site (https://eclecticlight.co/2016/02/13/how-it-took-2-days-to-upgrade-my-raid-thanks-to-a-bug-in-disk-utility-and-tired-old-hfs/) suggested using Drive Genius, but I was hoping for a less expensive solution. Anyone else had this problem?
Hi
My Pegasus R6 12TB Becomes very slow to the point that he can not read small files, devices lights do not work together, it's go back to work perfectly only for a few moments then freezes for long periods.
It works with difficulty, such as opening a window.
sometime works well.
Recreating logical volume
Hi, I have a Promise R4 that has suffered a the hands of an incompetent and needs to have the logical volume rescued.
The tech ejected all the drives while the system was off, brought it up with new disks and recreated a new array.
I need to revert back to the old array definition, very badly. I have imaged the raw data off the hard drives and am wondering how to approach this.
My thought it to put the new disks in, recreate an array in the same "shape" as the old one, power off, and if necessary overwrite the disks with the images I have. Bring it up, and the partition should be there. Right?
Question: does creating a logical volume or anything else *necessarily* write to the drives?  I would sooner it did not write a partition table or format a volume, just update the controller's definition of what the storage array should look like.
Doable?
MacOS cannot repair the disk "Promise RAID"
Hello everyone,
I would like to begin by thanking everyone who might take the time to read my issue and guide me to a solution.
I am an editor currently working on a movie which workflow went from FCP7 (too outdated and many compatibility issues) to Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017. I am using a Pegasus R6 10TB as main storage and interface (all rushes, renders etc.). The disk is connected to the iMac (mid-2011, i7 3,4 GHz, 16 Go DDR3, HD 6970M, 10.12 Sierra) via Thunderbolt.
Today during a quite large render session on Adobe Premiere, the software froze and crashed. I restarted the computer with many difficulties which now prompts me "MacOS cannot repair the drive Promise RAID. You can still open or copy files on the disk but cannot save any changes made to the files".
I am aware this must be a permission issue related to the crash but tried every tip to repair the main drive permissions with no result. As a result I cannot open the project in Adobe Premiere anymore since the drive is read only. I cannot manually change the permissions. I tried a lot of workarounds but only failed.
Since then, getting quite desperate since it is impacting the valuable editing time, I tried a migration of the disk array from RAID5 to RAID0 to kind of reset the structure. What I didn't plan on was the time it was gonna take since it has been more than one hour and only 2% of progression. I have to add 7TBs are used on the 10TBs total.
I would like to know if it would be possible to
1) Cancel the disk array migration since it will be probably useless and is currently impacting the performances of my computer (as well as making a ton of noise).
2) Did any of you encounter the issue above (macOS cannot repair the disk) and have a workaround in mind.
Thank you very kindly in advance
Best regards
Every time I try to update my R4 Pegasus1 firmware from 5.04.0000.36 to 5.04.0000.57 it goes through all the motions, but after I startup Promise Utility after restarting the raid, it still shows as version 36 and prompts me to update.  I also have a R4 Pegasus2 and it updated properly the first time.  Anyone have any ideas?
