Pegasus power supply replacement

For anyone experiencing a power supply failure in their Pegasus - as I did in my Pegasus32 R4 - after a lot of looking I was able to find yesterday a replacement via eBay from KDM Power in Houston. The unit arived today, install took 10 minutes, and my system is up and running again.

Here is a link to the unit; I found the people at KDM to be very knowledgable, responsive, and helpful:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/336158204663

I have no relationship with KDM aside from being a happy, and relieved, customer.

Two Pegasus RAIDS on one Mac?

Hello,

I have a Mac and a Pegasus2 that are both around 10 years old.

If I purchase a new Pegasus32 can I plug it into the Mac and move all the files over from the old Pegasus2 to the new Pegasus32?

thanks

need both pegasus and pegasuspro drivers? which ones?

I have a mix of 3 Pegasus2 R8, 2 Pegasus3 R8, and 1 Pegasus R12 volumes hanging off my Mac Studio. I have both com.promise.driverkit.pegasus.dext version 21.1.0 and com.promise.driverkit.pegasuspro.dext version 22.1.7 installed. The pegasus version at least used to be required for the Pegasus2 and Pegasus3 drives and is the latest version in the Downloads > Drivers section for those models. I believe when I installed the Pegasus 5 it required the pegasuspro driver and (I think) it shipped with this driver version. Disturbingly, the Pegasus R12 is not represented anywhere in Current Products and the Pegasus5 R12 lists no drivers. And the latest Pegasus Pro driver listed is 22.0.2. My 22.1.7 isn't listed anywhere I could find from the GUI, though it is findable using Google's site: functionality.

My main question is: Do I really require both pegasus and pegasuspro drivers? Note that the older Promise Utility.app shows only the Pegasus2 and Pegasus3 drives, not the R12, whereas the PROMISE Utility Pro.app shows all of the drives.

My secondary question is: How can I determine the latest driver for the Pegasus R12 and where can I download it? Despite being just barely over 1 year old Promise seems to have abandoned it for the Pegasus5 R12. (Yeah, I wish I'd waited.)

The motivation for investigating this is that one of my Pegasus2 drives has been dropping offline suddenly, for no reason I can discern, and I thought maybe, just maybe having two promise drivers could cause some issues.

Pegasus 32 will not mount after upgrading to MacOS 26.2 for M1 iMac

I had MacOS 26 and 26.1 and the Pegasus32 was working perfectly. I just upgraded two nights to 26.2 and now the Pegasus will not mount.

I ran the terminal command - systemextensionsctl list | grep promise and get driver 21.1.0 and says its activated and waiting for user.

I checked system information and I can see Pegasus32 under Thunderbolt USB bus 0 and says device is connected. I go to disc utility and nothing. I wanted to downgrade back to 26.1 but guess what, all my backups are on the promise array so I can only see the last 24 hours which is all 26.2. Please help as not only do I not have backups but I also have over 4 terabytes of videos and pictures that I cannot access.

I have restarted 3 times. I have manually shut down and unplugged unit and waited a few minutes and then restarted, still nothing. I have plugged and unplugged the thunderbolt cable, which from above I know is working since it can be found. Also based on your download page I know I have latest version of Promise Pro Utility and would assume I have latest version of drivers installed as I have a M1 iMac as I stated, it was working with 26.0 and 26.1. But I have not tried to uninstall or reinstall drivers yet.

Please help?!?

can't mount Promise Pegasus drive that was working

I installed some drivers from the Promise site and just cant mount the Pegasus 3 drive on my M3 Ultra Mac Studio, I can mount SSD drives, USB drives but not the thunderbolt drive. The drive mounts on other macs. Something in installed is messing things up--have tried to uninstall and delete a bunch of files in Terminal and re-install, no luck, I have only one mac that will not mount any HDD based thunderbolt drive, I know my cables are ok, etc. Have booted up in safe mode, etc...I can't see the drive in promise utility, anyone else deal with this?? thanks. It was working and I messed it up installing something.

Pegasus Util crashing entire M1 Studio

Utility crashing entire OS.
One drive failed in the array. I never got a warning from the Utility, despite being set to the lowest setting for warnings. I just happened to notice that one drive light was red.

I replaced the drive as usual, and it powered up as expected and was seen by the computer in System Report, but Promise Utility would launch with all menu options were grayed out, and the main interface window never appeared. Utility indicated all software and firmware was up to date.

I tried re-installing the utility, and since then, every time I launch the utility, it crashes the entire machine. Partial report from Console.app below.

After an entire day of tryng everything I could think of (reinstalling the utility, driver and DEXT DriverKit file, etc) I was finally able to get the RAID volume to mount... I have no idea how or why, but I'm cloning it off to a competitor's RAID immediately.

Pegasus R4. (I had migrated to a Peg32 until it totally died, right after sending it to Promise just before the warranty expired. I had demonstrated that it was an inconsistent problem, but they said that nothing was wrong. This response came so quickly that it's pretty clear they just plugged it in once, it mounted, and they diagnosed "user error" instead of doing a proper test on it, knowing that if they delayed the repair, it would go out of warranty. It continued to unmount and/or refuse to mount and/or refuse to restart without unplugging the power cord. Very quickly after that, out of warranty, it totally died and will not power up at all, but I'm too disgusted by the lack of support to even repair it. Well over a decade of owning & recommending Promise products, and now every time I walk into an edit suite and see one, I recommend changing to another brand as fast as they can.)

Can't set Configuration Status on refurbished Pegasus R6

Hello,

I just bought and received a refurbished Pegasus R6 - directly from Promise

It came without drives, so I used the drives from my ond Pegasus 2 R6, after erasing them with Mac Disk Utility.

They have all been inserted and all of the lights are blue. All of the physical drives show up appropriately in Promise Utility.

When I go to set their configuration status to "Unconfigured", I am unable to click EITHER unconfigured or Passthru.

The lock in the lower left hand corner is open.

I am using Promise Utility 4.06.0000.01 (C02).

I am completely flumoxed. Any assistance woudl be much appreciated.

Also, I plugged it in and the Mac said that the device could not be read and asked if I wanted to initialize it. Thought about it and opend the disk utility, but the drive doesn't show up.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Transfer array from Pegasus32 R6 to R4 when R6 is suddenly failing

Hi,

I'm currently having the Pegasus32 R4, but I'm thinking to add an R6 to the setup.

Questions:

- I would like to use the R6 as the main RAID, where one disk array of 4 disks is having both RAID 5 and RAID 6 logical drives. Having 1 pass through drive as a backup disk for the Mac, having 1 spare drive for migrations or as a hot spare. Now my question, if one day the R6 would fail, would it be possible to swap out the 4-disk array and plug them inside the R4, hoping to keep the RAID 5 and RAID 6 fully operational again and this immediately? I know that this is normally possible using the transport feature, but I'm not sure if the transport is not planned due to a failure if this would work, especially considering two different Pegasus32's? Are there any restrictions or preconditions to make this work? Like having to use the upper or lower 4 trays? Related to this, maybe a technical question, where does the Pegasys32 gets its configuration from, is that stored on the disks too?

- In that setup I would connect the R6 directly to the Mac, and the R4 connected to the R6. I would use the R4 as an additional offline backup. Question, can I keep the R4 unpowered all the time, so the 230V unplugged from the mains, but keeping the Thunderbolt cable connected to the R6? Will that do any harm to the Thunderbolt ingterfaces electrically, since power is on those cables for for example charging? It's because I've tried using the software power down feature of the R4, but the R4 seems not to remember its power state when the main is completely removed? So the only way is to cut the mains myself, but then I'm wondering if this is healthy in a prolonged way for the Thunderbolt interfaces?

- Last simple question, I'm assuming that a disk drive in pass through, if one day is put into any other enclosure, would still look the same to my Mac? So a pass through drive is 100% transparent?

Trying to make/define a fail save system...

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards,

Any updated news on the Pegasus M8 RAID storage with Thunderbolt™ 5

Hello,

Now that Apple Macs have Thunderbolt™ 5, I am seriously considering getting the Pegasus M8 instead of the Pegasus R12.

I think a YouTube video from NAB 2024 said that the Pegasus M8 would be released in late 2024, but I think that was optimistic, considering the release date of the Pegasus R12.

Is there any updated information about the release date and pricing for the Pegasus M8?

Thanks!

MacPro R4i to Mac Studio R12 Migration

I am moving from a 2019 MacPro with a Pegasus R4i, to a Mac Studio with a Pegasus R12. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to move the data directly from the R4i to the R12.

I haven't been able to mount the R12 to the old 2019 Mac Pro. The device appears in System Information -> Thunderbolt/USB4 to either Thundrebolt Bus, but never appears in Disk Utility.

If I target the 2019 MacPro to the new Mac Studio, I can mount that internal Macintosh HD, but don't see the Pegasus R4i.

Currently, I'm planning on using a clone I maintain of the R4i to shuttle the data over. Hoping there is a way to go directly though.

*The R12 mounts just fine to the Mac Studio. Pool 1 finished synchronizing yesterday. Raid 60, 1 spare.

Advised macOS driver install for Pegasus Promis R6

Hi,

I'm in the process of newly installing macOS on a couple of 2018 mac mini's.
I chose to do a new install to completely get rid of old stuff and settings that might cause trouble.

I have one system that has Ventura 13.7.2 at the moment, and another one that has Monterey (where I chose to do an internet restore, exactly to see what would be the macOS version that Apple would send to the mini)
Purpose is to at least upgrade the Monterey one to a more recent macOS version.

On both 2018 mini's I have a Pegasus Promise R6 connected using thunderbolt, and the Apple thunderbolt converter cable thingie's.

Question:
1. Do I need to install drivers for the Pegasus R6?
2. If the Promise utility is installed, does it automatically install the / a driver too?
3. What version of driver would be recommended for these older Pegasus R6? (Possibly a link?)

The reason why I have doubts:
- on the Ventura system the Promise utility is installed
- on the Monterey system the Promise utility is not (yet) installed
=> both systems "see" / mount the Pegasus R6
=> on both systems I have regular messages like: Disk not ejected properly. Eject "Pegasus R6" before disconnecting or turning it off.

For clarity:
- neither of the 2 mac mini's nor the Promise Pegasus R6 are turned off
So I gather it may have to do with (default) power saving settings?

Pegasus32 - Use “Pegasus32 Series Utility” or “Promise Utility Pro” software?

Dear,

Is there any advice on which of the software tools to use for the Pagasus32 R4?

Is the Promise Utility Pro software offering all settings you can do with the Pegasus32 Series Utility? Any advantages using one or the other, or any limitations?

macOS Legacy System Extension Warning

Hi there, I've been getting numerous warnings for the past year that the Promise Mac system extension is a "Legacy Extension" that will stop working in future versions of macOS.

Hi,

I saw in the knowledge base a post by Babatunde Akinkuolie about preferable not using an active Thunderbolt 3 cable on the Pegasus32 since it will reduce the speed.

What about the Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable of 1.8 meter, which is also an active cable?

SSD with Pegasus R12

Hi,

I am preparing a Raid 5 storage for a movie and I was planning on using HDDs mixed with one SSD. Do you have references as to what brand I could use that you have already tested?

The point was to use the SSD as a fast unload tool while keeping the cost low with HDDs on a pegasus r12.

firmware upgrade Pegasus R6

Hi,

I own a couple of 2nd hand Promis Pegasus, two R6 and one R4. I've had my experiences with them, so I have learned to touch them as little as possible ;-)

However one of the R6's has a firmware of 5.04.0000.36 while the other has 5.04.0000.61.
The older firmaware version is more noisy and regularly gives a beep (not shure why or when, but may have something to do with Ventura going to sleep or snooze)

The R6 with 5.04.0000.61 is still running Catalina. And on that more recent firmware, the fans run quieter and I don't have the beeping.

Therefore I would like to update the firmware on the 5.04.0000.36 one.
Now I posted on this forum before, but it seems my posts have vanished (? at least I can't seem to find them anymore, but I still have the past mails warning me that there were answers..) I seem to remember that in previous posts I was given the advise to use the Pegasus2 files, but not sure about that.

Long story short:
Could someone please point me to what firmware I should install best?
- I have downloaded the 5.04.0000.61 firmware but Promise Utility says there is a CRC checksum error?
- on Catalina I have Promise utility v 4.04.0000.48 (c04)
- on Ventura I have Promise utility v 4.06.0000.04 (c04)

Thanks a lot for helping out!

Pegasus R4 now not mounting after 2 days of use.

Have had our R4 up and running for 2 days. During those 2 days I loaded it up with files from other drives. During an upload from an external drive the R4 disconnected. Now it will not mount and I recieve an error saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." However, inside of the Promise Utility I can see the drives and see that nothing is out of the ordenary. I have tried new thunderbolt cables. Again, everything was working great this morning. All lights are blue on the box.

**When I noticed the change today I had just plugged in our XDcam reader and downloaded it's software. I'm afraid that this may have taken over the volume.

Updated: 1139am

I opened up OS Disk Utility. Pegasus shows up as an external. However, it is not capturing any information about the data. See Screen Shot. Options under DU is Frist Aid, Erase, and Info (infor screen shot in attachements).

Updated: 12:50

Spoke with Chris at support. Went through our Pegasus and found that things were working on that side of things.

Please help.

Firmware version 5.04.0000.57

SAS Harddrives

hello all...

as i own a pegasus1 r6 for almost a year now, i never run it in raid modes, just as a drive enclosure for some of my data disks. among them, a 14tb seagate exos x16 SATA spinner, which served me always fine.

i came across an offer of 10x 14tb wd ultrastar hc530 SAS drives for a really recent price and got 3 of them to have a testrun.

to test everything with an SAS drive before the order arrive, i asked a friend who have an old 600gb sas 12gbit drive which he never used anymore.

the test went successfully and the 600gb drive was just recognized and usable, so no problem with the larger drives?

as they arrived, the ultrastar SAS drives werent recognized at first, after a shutdown of the pegasus, the where listet but just on of the 1,75gb platter inside of the drive was found but not useable.

as it cannot rely on the drive size (the 14tb seagate exos SATA was always fully available), i thought its maybe the controller which can't handle SCSI-6 commands (but why the 600gb drive?).

i decide to get a pegasus2 r4 and test the drives in this enclosure, same result...

couraged with the known exos SATA drives, i got another pair, which i found also almost as cheap as the ultrastar SAS drives and they worked that perfect, that i ordered another two for a total of 5 drives.

they are happily sync now for almost 30h at 35% with a total capacity of 42tb in a raid5 with one spare drive.

but the reason for my post is: does anybody have a clue, why the known good ultrastar SAS drives are not fully compatible with the pegasus1/2 ?

Pegasus R6 fan problem

Since upgrading my firmware to version 5.04.0000.57 this week, my Pegasus R6 has become incredibly noisy. It seems like the fans are going full speed all the time now. I tried downgrading to version 56, but I'm still having this issue.

Is there any way to manually control the fan speed?

PP32 R8 Raid10 - single Logical Drive with multiple partitions, or multiple LD

After the ongoing inabilty to determine accurate size allocations, and the LV being formatted as APFS, I bit the bullet and spent a couple of days moving data off the Pegasus to available/newly aquired for the process devices

- barrel of fun

updated firmware

created new array

first created x5 LV, and formatted each under DiskUtility as Mac OS Extended (journaled), GUID partition map

thought about this for a bit, then thought to try one LV with multiple partitions

deleted and created new array

created one LV

created x5 partitions on that one LV

Both approaches create x5 mounted volumes, which is a bit of a pain re the resultant desktop clutter

So given the Pegasus is used for deep/archival storage and defacto backup, my question is, is there any overall advantage to either

1) one LV with multiple partitions

or

2) multiple LV, one patition

I'm thinking one LV with multiple partitions has some advantage when doing backups with CarbonCopyCloner, and searches... as the index will be smaller ( targeting one smaller volume/partition) rather than one much bigger single LV index

I see the effect of smaller indexes daily - a particular directory of 200,000 first level folders each names as a UUID value, doing a find, or a get info, on that takes forever (evevn on my mac mini m4 pro) . The archival content, going back years, hardly ever gets hit.

general thinking is more smaller is more manageble

leave the RaId to the Pegasus, leave the file management to the file system ( aka partition)

Either way, pity about all those mount points

Promise 2 R8 Drive not recognized on MacBook Pro

Hi,
Really hoping someone can help. I have a Promise 2 R8 drive with 8 years of my career backed up on it and I cannot access it now. I had to purchase a new MacBook pro (running OS 12.1) recently when my old one crashed. The new MacBook only has USB -C ports it for plugging in drives. I purchased the Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbotl 3 adapter from Apple so that I could plug the Promise 2 into the computer. When plugged in, the drive powers up and remains on, but never appears as a recognied drive. I have installed the driver I found on the promise website (MacDrv_V6.2.9) and can see it installed in my extensions. I know that the drive is still working as I plugged a friend older Macbook in and it mounted immediately. But I am completely stumped here. The Promise Utility App does not recognize it either. Any advice would be a huge blessing. Thank you.

I have seen responses to El Cap questions just brushing this off as an EOL product, but it's only 3 years old! Not to mention, it wasn't cheap.

I'm hoping that there is some chance someone either plans to fix the driver or knows a workaround.

Changing R8 from RAID5 to RAID10

Hello, Is there a step by step anywhere of how to change the 32TB (28TB) Pegasus R8, which default is RAID5, into RAID 10?

I am on a Mac, and can't seem to find a solution. When I try to change it using the Migration feature in the Promise Utility, it only gives me an option for RAID0 or RAID5.

Ultimatly, I am looking to have the unit create a backup of itself. I don't need 28TB, I would perfer 14TB and 14TB, and know the data has an auto backup for saftey.

Promise Pegasus R6 - Drive issue - Hard Drive question

It looks like I need to get a new spare for my R6. I can see all the data from 5 of the 6 drives. It seems I have not lost anything but I apparently have some problems with drive 6. Now I understand this process, I swap the drive out and rebuild the array so I continue to have stability at the same or higher level RAID. Right now I'm at RAID 05. I currently have 2TB drives, this was a 2013 or 2014 purchase. So I'm wondering if I can buy bigger drives now and swap them out over time. First I swap the spare, number 6, the bad one now, to say a 4TB or 6TB drive then I eventually match what ever I get and swap those out one at a time. Will this work? I do have all the data backed up to LTO or on our Shared storage so I could simply wipe the drive and get larger drives. It seems like swapping drives one at a time would be better in case I do need immediate access to any data.

Pegasus R6 not mounting

I have a first generation R6 that stopped mounting without warning. After talking with various reps I was told it's because of the firmware in the unit and that it's no longer supported so Promise can't help me. I'm desperate to get my files back. I understand I can get a Pegasus2 and put the old drives in there, but before I do that, is there anything else that can be done that won't cost me thousands of dollars?

Pegasus3 R6 turned itself on??

I've had a Pegasus3 R6 for five days, and it's been working well so far.

Last night, I shut my Mac off and went to bed, which powered the R6 off as usual. When I woke up the next day, the R6 had turned itself on and was showing a red power light. Or it might have been orange, I was freaked out so I didn't pay close enough attention. The fans were spinning but no HD activity. I powered my Mac up and the R6 turned blue and all the disks mounted fine. The utility status says everything is fine, and the events panel shows no report of the unit powering up in the middle of the night.

Why would the unit turn itself on when the computer is off? I was thinking maybe a power surge, but the R6 and my Mac are both connected to a UPS.

Is this something I should be concerned with?

Pegasus R4 can not be mounted/not displayed

Hi all

since upgrading from OSX 10.12.6 to OSX 10.13.3, the kernel extension PromiseSTEX.kext does not load on booting my MacPro. When using the trick below (from another thread), I can manually load the extension and bring my Pegasus R4 back online.

Unfortunaly, when my MacPro goes to sleep, the kernel extension again gets lost, and therefore also my Pegasus R4 gets lost.

I'm running my Pegasus R4 with the latest firmware 5.04.0000.61 and the Promise Util with 4.02.0000.10

My subsystem details can be found here (can not attach the file..)

I'm desperately looking for help to solve this issue, as I can't work like that.

Thanks for any adivse in permanently solving my issue.
Cornelius

Hi Philippe,

Have you tried loading the kernel extension?

sudo kextload /Library/Extensions/PromiseSTEX.kext

Then you can verify in the Terminal by querying the bundle ID:

kextstat | grep com.promise.driver.stex

The output should be:

47 0 0xffffff7f80f73000 0xb000 0xb000 com.promise.driver.stex (5.2.10) D5918F4B-6516-32DF-855F-E4CBE26067CD <46 12 5 4 3>

If you get the above, that means you loaded it successfully. You should also refresh System Information after you've done the above. You should see that the PromiseSTEX is loaded.

kextload man page
kextstat man page

Regards,

Phil

Pegasus R3

I currently have a Pegasus R6 using the original thudnerbolt 1 connection. I am thinking about upgrading my MBP to take advantage of Thunderbolt 3 and purchasing a new Pegasus3 R6 or R8. Some questions I have regarding the technology are related to throughput. I understand that the original thunderbolt was 5Gb/second and the Thunderbolt 3 is 40Gb/s but what will I really see using Final Cut Pro. The Pegusus family seems to be limited by the speed of SATA which is 6Mb/second. Currently my MBP can achieve almost 1000MB/second read write performance on the internal drive according to the BlackMagic Utilty but the issue falls to storage space. My Pegusus sees around 250/Mbyte per second. What will a newer Pegaus R3 achieve in reality when it comes to R/W performance when SATA seems to be the bottleneck. Are there advantages to using SSDs rather than conventional rotating drives? Are there plans to incorporate M.2 PCI drives inside the Pegasus class devices? I plan on using the device as a RAID 5 device.

Promise Pegasus R4 firmware/utility losing communication with Finder in OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

Hi Guys,

I'm having major issues with my Promise Pegasus R4 running on Yosemite 10.10.5 and Promise Utility Firmware Version 3.18.0000.36.

When I first boot up the OS X sees the R4 just fine, I can get in and look at clips via Finder, tag, rename, etc. After minutes, maybe 15 mins, it's no longer happy. Finder begins to freeze, spin, hang forever, and where I usually can (as I do on any other drive, and previously on my R4) view clips, do a two-finger touchpad scrub through them in a Finder window, here it will freeze before I can even see the clip's video image, it will not show the video and immediately produces the 'ole beach ball. This ONLY happens on my Pegasus, no other drives.

I originally treated this as an OSX 10.10.5 issue. I trashed Finder and Sidebar (as I thought initially it could have something to do with high volume of tags) plists, but none of this seems to have anything to do with it.

The R4 is cleanly formatted RAID 5 (12TB usable, with only 4TB of media on it).

Please, Promise, Wise Users, anyone, this is an SOS. Any help would be sooo appreciated. I really need my Promise Pegasus R4 to play well with others so that I can finish my job. As it is I cannot access my work.

Thanks,

Pegasus R4 disk error: "physical disk is marked as DEAD due to removal"

May I know what exactly this error message "physical disk is marked as DEAD due to removal" mean? Is this a real hard disk failure that it can't be used any more?

Another observation for my R4 is that it keeps failing on this disk drive number 4 only. I have encoutered this failure and replaced with new hard disk about 3-4 times that always for this drive number 4 only. Is this normal or something is wrong?

Pegasus3 R4 drivers not loading on imac

Hi! Does anyone know how to fix this? I have spent hours on the phone with Promise. The chassis went bad after 2 weeks and now the drivers for the new chassis ("PromiseSTEX" and Pegasus2R2ICON" in extensions list) won't load on the imac according to the imac system report. I redownloaded and reinstalled the driver, rebooted the imac several times, disconnected and reconnected everything. Amber power light on the new chassis the whole time.
Older Pegasus 2 R6 vs Newer Pegasus 3 R4

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a 12TB desktop RAID for video editing, and I keep coming back to the Pegasus range.

So my local CVP offer a 12TB unit as a 4 bay (the new Pegasus 3) and a 6 bay (the older Pegasus 2).

I'm wondering if there's any reason I should opt for the Pegasus 3 R4 over the Pegasus 2 R6?

I'm assuming the R6 will be slightly faster due to haveing more drives, despite it being an older model?
Am I also correct in believing that the R6 will give me 10TB of accessible storage, over 9TB on the R4?

A huge thanks in advance for any help on this one.

Peg3 R6 for iMac 27" TB1 and Sierra - Anything I need to know before buying?

Hi folks, - I am new here so pls be gentle.

I have an iMac Late 2013 27" i7 Thunderbolt 1 which I use for video editing using FCPX. I intend ordering a Pegasus3 R6 24TB for video editing.

I would like to know of any gotcha's before ordering. I understand I will need an Apple TB1/2 to TB3/USB-C adaptor cable, and may have to install some drivers. I plan on using RAID 6, which will give me approx. 16TB of usable space. I have a Synology DS1815+ which will server as backup target.

Q1: Is the Peg3 R6 a suitable choice?

Q2: Will it work ok on TB1 iMac?

Q3: Anyone have any "real world" experience with this setup? Please share.

Thanks in advance,

Pegasus R6 won't mount

Hi There - hope someone can help.

My Pegasus R6 will not mount on my Sierrra iMac

- it shows up in Apple Disc Utiliy but the volume listed as (-)

- it show up as if everything is fine in the Promise utility

- have checked that the cable is properly plugged in, restarted computer

What happened -

The unit showed a drive as having failed. I swtiched it off, restarted computer, and then it came back online. The mac showed an error message saying I could read from the drive, but not write, and that I should back everything up to another drive. This happened when migrating from a 2011 iMac to a new one. Unfortunatly the main film on the drive was a 2.5TB Final Cut Pro library, and the only spare drive I had was 2TB. The project would not open on the new iMac, saying it was already open on the old one (which was switched off). I plugged the R6 into the old machine, opened the project on the old machine and deleted the render files, and this got the library size down to less than 2TB. But when I moved the R6 back to the new machine the disc failed to mount.

This isn't the first time I've had a similar problem - the unit has had four discs fail over it's life, and it has done the "read but can't write, better back up" trick once before as well. It has not been very reliable. I've made it a habit to keep it switched off when not in use, and that seems to have helped. The two times it brought up the error message "read but can't write, etter back up" were when it was copying large files.

In the past I've been able to use the Promise utility to restore the drive, but in this case I'm more concerned about the data - that one big project - that I want to get back.

FWIW - I have a backup of the project on another disc, but the backup is corrupt.

Should I replace the drive that indicated it had failed (it was the bottom one, so easy to remember which one) and try restoring the disc with the promise utility - will that have a chance of getting my file back? Or just scramble things further?

Sounds of the Pegasus3 R6

Hi, Just started using my new Pegasus3 R6 in RAID 5 with my new 2016 15" MacBook Pro. I'd like to know if it's normal for the drives to make so much noise? Simply put, the spinning drives sound like they're gurgling. It also does this sporadically while sitting idle. Is this normal? I realize that there are six spinning drives which would make some noise, but this seems to be excessive. Please let me know what your experiance is? Thanks, Ray

I have a five-year old R4 I use for backups and storing other archived data. I have replaced several faulty drives over the years with no real issue, just hot-swaped the drives, allow it to re-build and move on. Now my mac does not even recognize the R4 as an external drive that can be mounted. Are all my backups and data gone?

Pegasus R6 Not Mounting / Showing up in Mac Finder

Dear Support Team,

I have exactly the same problem like other people. My Pegasus Promise R6 suddenly stopped mounting two days ago. Promise Utilitiy tells me that everything is ok but I just cant get access to it. There are a lot of files saved on it so I donnot want to try something without your advice. Under the Thunderbolt tab of Mac it tells me that the device is connected. I attached some screenshots. I also made the subsystem file info. Is it possible to attach it or send it to you?

Many thanks in advance and best regards
Elwin

Using SSDs on Pegasus3 r8

I am interested in purchasing a Pegasus3 R8 if I could install 2TB SSDs, but the only three devices that are listed in the Pegasus3 compatibility list v1.1 are three Toshiba products and although the header says SATA/SSD, none of them is an SSD.

So here is my question: Does Pegasus3 R8 support any SSD, e.g., Crucial 2TB CT2050MX300SSD1?

Pegasus3 r4 crashing

hi, recently bought a Pegasus3 R4 to use with my MacBook Pro. Changed the drives to WD black 6tb. Worked great in the beginning. But now as I've filled up about 8tb it's started to crash every time I use it. Not sure what he issue can be. But my guess has been either the drives or the macOS Sierra 10.12.4. Any clue what it can be?

i can't copy material to the drive without crashing the whole mac.

worked perfect for the first days, then now it's just useless.

Can I connect Pegasus3 to the thunderbolt 2 on my iMac27"

Hi

I am new to Thunderbolt solutions. Have an old fine MacPro with 4 disks, it just works, but now i consider getting the new 27"/5K iMac wich has only thunderbolt 2 out. And then connect via a Corning 100' optical cable, possibly adding a converting short cable?. I look at the Pegasus3 since its the newest and I might add a Macbook Pro which have the Thunderbolt3 ports. But maybe I should settle for a Pegasus2???

Pegasus R4 firmware update and compatibility with Mac El Capitan

Hi,

I run an Pegasus R4 (firmware 5.02.0000.53) and I have seen some questions/concerns on compatibility with the most recent El Capitan Mac OS. Today I run OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 without any problems.

Just want to make sure I do not upgrade and create problems...

Questions:

1. Is my R4 compatible with Mac OS El Capitan? Is it correct I need to update the firmware?

From the SR 2.44 release notes, I understand that:

- SR 2.42 provides: Bug Fixing of Mac Utility and support OS X 10.11

- SR 2.44 with FW 5.04.000.57 has a new Mac SW 3.20.0000.15?

2. How do I upgrade the firmware ? (cannot find any info on this).
I have seen a new firmware SR2.44, downloaded it, but my Mac cannot handle this .img file.....

R4 data:

serial number: M74H11812000454

Revision number: A2

Transferring disks / raid set from Pegasus to Pegasus2?

Hi there,

I'm curious if it's possible to remove the physical disks from an operable Pegasus R6 enclosure set up as RAID5, and install them in a Pegasus2 R6 enclosure, without loss of functionality / data.

I have freely transferred raid sets from Pegasus to Pegasus enclosures, and everything has been fine, but hesitate to move them in to a Pegasus2 enclosure without knowing if it'll cause any issues.

My question is can i just swap these between mac and pc ? i mean can i connect simply edition to pc (by using peasus driver for windows and format the drive to windows format) or can i connect pc edition to the mac (by formating the drive to osx format). Because what i'm thinking is that the connectivity is only depends on the driver and file format, so physically the pc and simply edition is just the same, am i right ?

3. if my motherboard doesn't have a thunderbolt port, can i just connect to my usb 3 type C ? if so, will i get any speed problem ?

Thanks

Osx server and Pegasus R6

Hi,

i use osx server Sierre with raid Pegasus R6 on my Mac mini.

All think is ok.

But our mailbox use too much space, so I think to move all storage of osx server on my raid. Data is already on Raid but now i would like move /Library/server folder.

is there any issue possible? Does anybody work like this?

thanks for your advise.

Pegasus R6 won't mount

Between yesterday and today, my Pegasus R6 won't mount. Following directions from this site, I removed all the drives, updated the firmware and tried again.

I'm running Mac OS 10.11.6

Pegasus utility is working, all drive lights seem OK. System Information sees Pegasus R-Series.

Disk Utility sees Promise, but won't allow me to mount it.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Pegasus R6 not mounting on 1 MAC Sierra 10.12 but mounts on macair

I'm accessing a drive via my MacBook laptop using thunderbolt . 10.12 no drivers installed. Did the same with MAC air no drivers and the drive showed up. Not sure why MacBook not seeing drive if another can.

additionally I installed the utility and uninstalled for testing - unfortunately when it was installed it did nothing. On my desktop with the utility installed I can manage the raid . But on on lapto there are no options other than limited preference options.

any thoughts? What is the proper utility download?

Cannot create Disk Array on Pegasus R4 RAID

I inserted 4 new mushkin reactor 1tb SSD's into the Pegasus R4 RAID box, then formatted each drive to be recognized by my Mac computer. After launching the Promise Utility I changed each physical drives configuration from PassThru to Unconfigured, although when I tried to create a Disk Array for some reason I am not given the option to select the drives for the task. I noticed that I can run an automatic creation through the utility's wizard but it would only create a RAID 5 level, when I try to manually set it up I cannot do anything. Anybody know what the issue could be?

Here is an image of the issue: http://imageshack.com/a/img921/6528/cFMnPQ.png

Pegasus R3-4 on 2013 mac with Thunderbolt 2-3 adapter Voltage Temperature Issue

I am running a brand new Pegasus R3-4 on a rather old (late 2013 ) imac with the apple thunderbolt 2-3 adapter with a Pegus 2 M4 daisy chained after the R3-4 (also with an apple adpter thunderbolt 2-3)

No specific issue in operating except that I get

Temperature 1 critical

Temperature 2 : normal

Voltage 1 : ok

Voltage 2 : ok

Voltage 3 : critical

immediately upon powering up while the status description for the enclosure remains on " loading " and never loads.

The Pegasus 2 M4 daisy chained after the R3-4 is all ok with no diagnostic issues.

Any help appreciated, although the issue does not seem to affect usage ( but you never know...) and there is no warm area detectable by touch on the R3-4 which sits by itself in a well ventilated and air conditionned room. ( and it is winter in Hong Kong )

Regards

Needed: Pegasus 3 Setup Advice

Hi, I just received my 2016 maxed out MacBook Pro w/ touchbar. In addition, I will be purchasing a maxed out iMac once one is offered with thunderbolt 3. I'm coming from the PC world using Sony Vegas Pro & DVDA. I'm currently diving into FCPX & Motion. I mainly do personal video's from 10 minutes to an hour of 4K and/or HD 1080 footage in the time line. I'd like to add, I multicam (only two camcorders) at times as well. I use plugins, effects, chroma keying, music. My equipment only consists of the following; Sony XDCAM PXW-X70 w/ 4K, XAVC L(GOP) & AVCHD
Sony RX100 V w/ 4K GoPro Hero 2 (HD) With that being said, I'm interested in the 24TB Pegasus3 R6 Thunderbolt 3 configured in RAID 5 for my video editing drive. I'm also considering a 12TB Pegasus3 R4 Thunderbolt 3 configured in RAID 5 for my backup drive. I would like some advice from those of you that have a simuliar setup? I don't want to do a big overkill in what's needed but, I also want smooth video editing without hiccups. If you have any advice in regards to setup, RAIDs along with your setup, please let me know? Your advice and/or help would be most appreciated. Thanks, Ray
