Pegasus 2 logic drive disappeared... possible 2 logical drives???

Hi there,

I realised that i had a bunch of files disapear so ran some disc recorery software and found the files were still on the raid, but then I noticed that there looked like there were 2 logical drives?

I ve booted but not both logic drives seem to be offline, and 1 drive had a red light.

I replaced the drive with the red light, but no luck. unless the logic drive is solved it wont let me re build.

critcle events says "missing pd" but i cant find anything to do with missing pd on this site? log attatched.

Looking for Pegasus2 Firmware 5.04.0000.36

Apple has declared all my Intel Macs that I connect my Pegasus2 units to are now "vintage" so I have turned to loading Linux on them to maintain security updates and keep the Macs and the Pegasus2 units from the eWaste graveyards.

I have 3 Pegasus2 units:

R8 - firmware 5.04.0000.36 - works with the Linux Kernel STEX driver

R8 - firmware 5.04.0000.64 - does not work reliably with the Linux kernel STEX driver

M4 - firmware 5.04.0000.62 - does not work reliably with the Linux kernel STEX driver

A few years ago I emailed Promise support asking for the 5.04.0000.36 firmware to be made available from the Promise Download Center in their Legacy Products section.

I went back and forth with the Promise tech, but he couldn't seem to grasp why I wanted to load an older firmware onto devices that had newer firmwares. In the end Promise never made the older firmware file available to me via the Download Center or any other mechanism.

So out of desperation, I am posting this to see if there is a community stalwart out there that has archived all their firmware upgrade files, and has a copy of firmware 5.04.0000.36 that could be made available to me.

In case no such stalwart community member exists out there, I will make another appeal to Promise to:

1) make the 5.04.0000.36 driver file available on the Download center, since it works with the latest (quite old) version of the Linux Kernel STEX driver

or

2) have a developer update the STEX kernel driver to work with the Pegasus2 5.04.0000.64 firmware, since that is the recommended firmware for the Pegasus2 units. I don't think its too much to ask that at least one of the available firmware files for the Pegasus2 be supported in the Linux Kernel STEX driver, if Promise won't make the old firmware file available. 5.04.0000.64 makes sense to be that version since it is currently the latest (and presumably last) version of the Pegasus2 firmware.

In my mind the simplest thing is for Promise to add the requested firmware file to the Download center - I mean what is the downside to that? If someone flashes their Pegasus2 with the old firmware, they can still flash it with the new firmware at a later date (say when they can afford an Apple Silicon Mac).

Pegasus2 R6 One disk has a red light

On my ancient Pegasus2 R6 system, one of the disks has developed a red light.

I have completely forgot everything about system maintenance on this program.

I have just reinstalled the Promise Utility program (4.06.0000.04 (C04). But that seems to just run a program called Instruments. I vaguelly recollect a function to check the disk status on ths program.

How do I fix the red light issue?

Logical drive has been set to critical

Hi all, I have a solid orange light on the power button. Using the Promise utility, it is saying "Logical drive has been set to critical". is this recoverable?

Pegasus2 R8 + Mac mini M4, drive disconnects repeatedly

Pegasus2 R8 + Mac mini M4 + Apple A1790 Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter: when Pegasus2 powers on, drives are mounted normally and I can access the data on the volumes. After waiting (or using the drives) for a while - usually 2-5 minutes - I get OS-level notifications there drives were unmounted abnormally. Similar issue has happened with both macOS Sequoia (initial OS that was installed on Mac mini M4) and macOS Tahoe.

Before Mac mini M4 I had Mac mini M1, and I was able to use Pegasus2 with the same adapter and cable without any issues for many years. I also have a Mac mini 2011, and Pegasus2 works perfectly without the adapter.

Promise Utility's Event log only shows "stopped by host unplug" as if the cable would have been disconnected, so it won't help much with debugging. macOS logs don't show any clear reason for ejection either.

Pegasus2 firmware is 5.04.0000.64 and I also have the latest DEXT driver installed on my Mac mini M4:

systemextensionsctl list | grep promise
com.promise.driverkit.pegasus (21.1.0/1) com.promise.driverkit.pegasus [activated enabled]

Any ideas what could be causing this behaviour or are you maybe having the same issue?

How long does a FW upgrade take?

Promise utility suggested I upgrade my firmware from 5.04.0000.18 to 5.04.0000.64 on my R4. I've been on the "Please wait. Firmware update in progress..." screen for upwards of 30 minutes and all four drives are flashing activity non stop. Is this normal? If not, what do I do now?

Thanks

Pegasus2 R4 orange power light and not mounting

Hi all, I have the Pegasus2 R4 with 4x4TB HDD connected to a MacPro late 2013. My unit was having issues where it would randomly unmount and remount causing multiple "Your disk was not ejected properly" messages. Then several days ago the volume unmounted, the power button light turned orange, and could not be shut down via the, now, orange button. The thunderbolt light is lit and blue, the fan is spinning, all of the drives are showing blue and spinning up when powered/plugged in. Also, on occasion, it causes a kernel panic. The system report shows that it was caused by com.promise.driver.stex. There is no window in the Promise Utility app and all the menu items are greyed out.

Here's what I've tried so far:

Unplugged the unit, waited (up to 24hrs) and plugged it back in

Let it run for 24hrs to see if it would sort itself out

Removed the drives and start up

Tried changing ports both on the Mac and the unit

Checked system info - thunderbolt, and it was listed there, although it showed only as connected upstream

Disk utility

removed and reinstalled com.promise.driver.stex

removed and reinstalled the Promise Utility app

Removed power cable from UPS and tried directly in wall socket

Tried the promiseutil comand line interface (Error (0x4008): subsystem not found)

Fully cleaned dusted the unit

Tried different rebooting orders (mac then unit, etc)

Fully clean and dusted Mac

Reset the SMC

Reset the PRAM/NVRAM

Cleared caches on mac

Ran the maintainance scripts in terminal

Inserting the disks one at a time

Swearing at the unit and callling it names

Thanks in advance for any help or creative suggestions you all can send my way. All of my work is located on those drives and deadlines are looming. If there is something that I've missed (a hidden magic button I can poke with a paperclip would be great) or something I can point to and blame for this. Please let me know.

Cheers!

Pegasus 2 R4 - No longer starts up as expected

Pegasus 2 R4 - was working fine until after unmounting and then physically disconnecting the unit from my Mac I noticed it did not go to sleep as expected.

Now when powering on from cold the fan starts up but I do not hear the expected disk chattering that shows the unit is coming to ready.

Unit shows in System Information as connected to Thunderbolt.

System Extension is loaded (com.promise.driverkit.pegasus (21.1.0/1))

promiseutil shows no subsystem available.

Unit does not respond to power button, power cable has to be removed.

This feels like a sudden hardware failure (for whatever reason) but if anyone has any suggestions on how to possibly revive it that would be most welcome.

Thanks.

Pegasus 2 R4 8TB upgrade to 12TB (best drives?)

Hello,

I've been using my Pegasus 2 R4 8TB (Raid0) for the last 10 years and it's been incredibly solid for everyday use. I'm a video editor and also use it to back up photos, home videos, etc.... I've only had 1 drive fail and did not lose any data that Im aware of. I don't want to press my luck and need to replace ASAP.

I'd like to upgrade the R4 to 12TB but it seems all the tested drives from the link below have all been discontinued. Has anyone recently upgraded using a newer SATA III 3.5 3TB HDD? Any suggestions to a drive that would be compatible? Do I need to stick to 3TB or can I drop a 4TB drive into the array and still have it function properly.

http://promise.com/DownloadFile.aspx?DownloadFileUID=4279

Could this drive work for my needs?
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=Seagate%203.5&filters=fct_capacity_844%3A3tb

Pegasus2 R6 not showing in Finder or Disk Utility

Hi all,

I need some help here, asap, please.

I have two Pegasus2 R6 connected to my iMac for years without any issue until now. Both are configurated as RAID5 and have always worked fine.

But yesterday, one of them stopped showing in Finder so I can't access the very important data I have in it.

When I try to open Disk Utility, this app hangs on for a long time and nothing happens. Only once it oppenned but the missing drive is not there either.

But if I go to About this Mac>System report>Thunderbolt, the drive is there as usual.

Please keep in mind that I have two identical units daisy chained together and they have allways worked fine. Only one is not showing now.

Some added info:

iMac Retina 5K, end of 2015, 4 GHz Intel Core i7, Catalina

The drive starts up normaly as usual, tho short bips, all leds blue.

I have changed the order between then, disconnected the other one, changed thunderbolt cables, changed thunderbolt ports, tried with another mac, both with Catalina and Mojave, no sucess.

What could be the problem and what can I do to make it appear againg in Finder?

Thanks

Pegasus2 R6 Thunderbolt - two drives offline

Hello, I was working on an archived video project (approx 15TB). I had an r6 mounted and the footage was all there and available.

Then I unmounted the RAID. I inadvertently popped open two drive draws, forgetting the RAID was still powered on.

Here's the Promise utility screenshot.

As you may be able to see in the above screenshot, two drives are now "offline" and the RAID is degraded and unmountable.

I'm hoping all the data is still on those drives and I can reconstruct the RAID.

Is there a way to get the RAID back into a happy happy state?

If not, is there any hope for data recovery from a third party or is that folly?

Thank you for your thoughts, time and expertise. Bergen.

Pegasus 2 R8 - Need Help

I have a Pegasus 2 R8 that I am trying to get data from. It disconnects consistently and has very slow copying that eventually bombs out - randomly reboots the whole machine.

Started with a Mac Mini M1 - had Sonoma as the OS - I was able to copy from it and write data to it without any problem. I updated the OS to Sequoia and that is when the problems started.

I updated the firmware to the most current.

I installed the Mac Silicon driver

I uninstalled the Mac Silicon driver and installed the standard Dext Driver.

I have gone back to the previous OS Sonoma and used the Promise Utility to make sure that the device or raid array didn't have any issues. (unit passes all tests)

I bought an old mac mini (intel chip) with monterey on it thinking I can use the old driver - but no luck.

Here is my question - what am I missing. Is there a utility that can tell me what is wrong. Can anybody advise?

Is the firmware causing the problem? Is there a firmware I should use for Monterey. Or is there a specific version of Mac Os and firmware combo that is the perfect set.

Pegasus2 R6 forced in "Read Only Mode"

I recently had an external SSD (Samsung T7) failure that caused several kernel panics on my MacBook Pro. During that time, macOS set my Pegasus RAID volume to read-only.

I’m using a Pegasus2 R6 connected via Thunderbolt to an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro (macOS 15.x). I checked the SMART logs for all drives and found that the disk in Slot 4 was still online but showed reallocated/unstable sectors, so I treated it as failing.

What I did:

Made a full backup of the Pegasus volume to an external HDD

Hot-swapped the drive in Slot 4 (without powering down the Pegasus)

Inserted a new identical drive, set it to Unconfigured and manually rebuilt the disk array

Rebuild finished successfully, redundancy check and currently running media patrol

In Promise Utility everything is green and all drives report as healthy

However, the RAID is still read-only in macOS, and on every boot I get a message that macOS tried to repair the volume, failed, and therefore mounted it read-only. Disk Utility First Aid on the Pegasus volume also still fails.

My questions:

Is there any Pegasus-side flag or state I need to clear to get out of read-only, or is this purely a filesystem issue on the macOS side now?

Given that I have a full backup: is the recommended / safest solution to delete the logical drive, recreate and reformat the array, then restore from backup?

Any guidance on the proper next step would be very much appreciated.

R8 Not working after Rebuild and Restart

Hello,

I replaced and rebuit a bad brive on my R8 Array. The rebuild was successful. When I restarted the Mac Pro, the Array doesn't mount and I get "The Disk you attached was not readable by this computer" error pop-ups for all 8 disks in the Array, with the options to Eject, Ignore or Initailize. I've also tried different Thunderbolt cables and connecting to another Mac.

The drives do show up in the Promise Utility App but the Disk Array and Logical Drive tabs show no configured drves/arrays.

Can anyone advise on what issue may be and is the data still present on the drives?

Pegasus 2 crashes M4 Mac Studio upon waking from sleep

After installing the DEXT driver and Promise Utility, my Pegasus 2 R6 works well. But once the computer goes to sleep with the RAID mounted and then tries to wake up, it crashes the Mac, forcing a restart. It has done this numerous times in the past two weeks.
Pegasus 2R6 does not stay on with thunderbolt convertor.

I recently got a new Mac book and it doesn't have any thunderbolt 2 ports on it. So I bought a third party convertor, USB-C to thunderbolt 2, to connect it to my Pegasus 2 R6. However now my Pegasus 2 does not stay on. It tries booting up, it beeps twice then the power light turns oragne and then turns off. I tried using both thunderbolt ports on the Pegasus but still it doesn't stay on.

I heard that I need an offical Apple brand convertor is that true? Is there a way to fix this or am I just unable to us my Pegasus with my new Mac book.

Upgraded firmware on Pegasus2 R6, now it won't mount

I tried to upgrade my Pegasus2 R6 to the latest firmware, v5.04.0000.64. After restarting the computer the raid is visible in System Report but not in Promise Utility, Disky Utility or on the desktop. What could possibly be the issue?

Reformatting R8 for AFPS

Dear Brains, I have just migrated my system from iMac-2015 to Mac Mini M4. (Sequoia) It caused a number of issues some of which are sorted. However the files I store on the Pegasus 2 R8 now have a mixture of read write permissions under such listings as 'System', 'Wheel', 'Everyone' and more often than not a spinning wheel that reads 'Fetching'. Sometimes it also reads 'Admin 2 (Me)' which is not a user that exists. These are mainy image files.

Some images I can open and save seamlessly but others I cannot save. Soem I tried saving to my Desktop but when I dragged them to the files in the R8 and deleted them from the desktop they also deleted from the R8. Apple advise reformatting to AFPS which as far as I can tell will erase everything (all 26Tb of it) The work is backed up to external drives but it also seems usings Apple's Disk Utility means a Raid 5 set up with AFPS is not viable. (It was set up as a stripe with redundancy disk which I believe to be Raid 5) as well as a partition for Time Machine which is now no longer needed.

I use Lightroom to catalogue my work and have subdivided the R8 disks into sections 1A - 9A which I make basic mirrored back ups of on disks 1B - 9B via a hard drive enclosure using Chronosync.

Does anyone have suggetsions as to the best way to reformat the R8 disks to make them work with the Mac Mini? I was hoping not to erase them but cannot see another way.

I was thinking Softraid may be the way to go instead of Apple Disk Utility as I may be able to preserve the Raid 5 set up with AFPS or perhaps I just have to go for Raid 0 and rely on my mirrored back ups if there is an issue.

Thank You

Pegasus 2 R4 powers on, then switches off immediatelu

Hello,

I bought a Pegasus 2 R4 'sold as seen' from an auction.

I've downloaded the manuals and am working through them. However, I've hit a snag which doesn't seem to be answered in the Troubleshooting section...

I've plugged the R4 into the mains, and switched it on with the front button. The unit switches on, there is a fan noise. The power button LED lights up orange. After about 10 seconds the LED goes blue for two seconds, briefly changes back to orange, then switches off.

It does this whether connected or not, and whether the drive trays are inserted or not.

I don't even know if the unit is functional, but would love to be able to use it!

Thanks for any help you can give!

Reading speed too slow, recurrent sleep problems

I have a pegasus2 R4 with 4 2TB hdd in RAID 5.

There were no problem using this product with my 2012 iMac. Recently I changed my 2012 iMac to 2017 iMac CTO (4.2 i7, 64GB ram, 1TB SSD)

After changing my system, pegasus2 shows 2 major problems.

1. Speed problem

Pegasus2 only shows write speed 300-400MB/s and read speed 150-200MB/s in blackmagic speed test. I connected pegasus2 via thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter from apple. In iMac 2012 with thunderbolt 2 it showed write speed with 600-700MB/s, and read speed with 400-500MB/s. I updated my pegasus utility, firmware, and Mac OS driver with most recent ones, but it doesn't fix the problem.

2. Sleep problem

Pegasus2 sleeps after iMac sleep but automatically awakes after 1min (iMac is still in sleep). It keeps going to sleep and awake repeatedly all night long even if iMac is in sleep state. Also after this situation, if I awake the iMac, promise utilty won't work.

In the uploaded image, you can see the sleep and awake problem captured from promise utility.

I even made my enery saver from Mac OS, and uncheked the box "Put hard disks to sleep when possible", and also unchecked network awake & power nap activiation, but it still goes to sleep and automactically awakes.

I really want to know how to solve this 2 problems, because it's very annoying.

R8 drive suddenly very slow. Error message says some data can't be read or written.

My Pegasus 2 R8 has been working for 10 years without any issues. But today, as I was copying data to a backup drive, the file transfers suddenly started creeping along or crapping out with error messages saying 'some data can't be read or written.' I assume one of the drives has failed, so I have submitted a tech support case to Promise along with the service report -see attached- but as my RAID is no longer covered by the warranty, I am wondering what my options are.

Obviously, I'd like to get the drive working again, but more importantly, I need to copy all the data on the drive.

Pegasus2 R4 no longer mounting after 2 days use with new synchronised Raid5

Synchronization took about 20 hours, then I started using it with no problem, editing 4k video, 650MB/s read and write approx. It operated fine from both an M1 Mac Studio and M2 Macbook Air. Then I shut down, moved the drive, reconnected and it no longer mounts, however the Promise Utility sees it fine and says there's no problem.

OSX Disk Utility shows an external drive called "Promise Pegasus2 R4 Media", but says it's "Uninitialized", so it cannot be read, or ejected, and disk first aid takes about 3 seconds and completes fine.

The drives were formatted as APFS.

I've tried connecting on a Mac Studio M1 running Ventura 13.6.7, a Macbook Air M2 running Ventura 13.5 (both with all appropriate Promise drivers installed, and it worked on both for about 36 hours), plus an Intel based core i7 Imac.

I've tried putting the original 2TB drives back in and they're no problem at all. They mount straight away in their 1 logical drive Raid5 configuration. The old Toshiba drives are dated from March 2014, they're surely getting near the end-of-life, and there's not enough capacity for me.

So I put the new drives back in again and it won't mount - Uninitialized.

I've attached a subsystem report.
Drives from Older Pegasus R2 RAID enclosure in a newer Promise P3WBR4 enclosure

I'm looking at a newer Promise P3WBR4 4 Bay Diskless Thunderbolt3 RAID available now. What would happen if one transplanted drives from an older Pegasus R2 Thunderbolt 2 RAID enclosure to this new enclosure?

The data is old and not very important.

But would the data be readable in this new enclosure or would one need to format the drives and treat this set as a new set?

P.S. This new unit has a part code F29PWR420000000

Pegasus2 R6 not working

Hi,

Promise Pegasus2 R6 drive stopped to be available on computers.

With the drives in it promise utility doesn't recognize the pegasus2.

If i remove all drives then pegasus2 is available. I try to hot plug all the 6 drives but same promise utility hangs and pegasus2 was not available.

I've removed again the drives and tried to do a firmware update of pegasus2. it was 05.04.0000.27 or 05.04.0000.37 can't remember and i try to upgrade to 05.04.0000.56. But i get a message update failed and the update progress bar was still 0%

I powered off the pegasus2 and now it doesn't want to power on. I hear the fan but the power button doesn't turn blue , red or orange.

Support case is open but waiting for the answer so i came here to see if there is a chance i can get my data back.

Buying a new pegasus2 can be an option.
Please advise and i hope there is a small chance to get my datas

Thanks

Get Offline drives Online again

A colleague of mine became very curious about my Promise Pegasus2 R4 and found out on his own that it was possible to release it´s hard drives while the device was still on. This caused the disks to go into Offline Mode.

To change the four hard drives in Pegasus2 back to Online Mode again, I could not use the latest version of Promise Utilities that I had installed on the Mac. This the latest version of Promise Utilities, lacked commad line tools(CLI-features) which I found out was needed to get the drives Online again. When I typed: promiseutil in the Macs terminal application, it answered with "Command not found". I had to go to: https://www.promise.com/Support/downloadcenter and look for an installer for an older version of Promise Utilities that also contained the Promise CLI tools. I went for a version 4 because I had seen one used it with CLI commands on one of kb.promise.com´s pages. When I installed this older version of Promise Utilities, the promiseutil showed up at ones when I typed "promiseutil" i the Macs Terminal application:

user@My-MacBook-Pro ~ % promiseutil

-------------------------------------------------------------

Promise Utility

Version: 4.04.0000.40 Build Date: Feb 26, 2020

-------------------------------------------------------------

The row with '*' sign refers the current working HBA/Subsystem path

To change the current HBA/Subsystem path, you may use the following command:

 spath -a chgpath -t hba|subsys -p <path #>.

Type help or ? to display all the available commands

-------------------------------------------------------------

cliib>

Now to get all four hard drives in the Pegasus2 R4 raid Online again, I had to type the followig line, one time for each drive and change the number to 2, 3, 4 and press Enter(return) each time to confirm the action to the Pegasus2 R4:

phydrv –a online –p 1

A fast way to do this is to type the line over ones, press Enter(return) and then press the Up-arrow on the keyboard(to repeat last command), change the number and press Enter(return) and repeat this.

I believe that if you have more that four drives i the Pegasus2 R4 raid, the process will be the same.

I great thanks to Nazar at Promise Technical Support for bringing us this great solution to a stressful situation. If you don´t know about Promise Technical Support, as I did not, you can get supreme and fast support at https://support.promise.com

Promise Utility crash, Automatic Rebuild running over a week after failed drive replacement.

Pegasus2 R8 had failed drive. Downloaded latest Promise Utility and launched app, it connected/mounted drive. Ejected failed drive, then as soon as I inserted the new drive (HGST compatible) the Promise Utility crashed. Relaunched Promise Utility, it was unable to connect to Pegasus2.

Although I never selected the "Automatic Rebuild" preference, the rebuild seemed to have started in the background. Then the entire OS froze (macOS Monterey) and the computer became unusable so I have no status or feedback from the Pegasus.

The power button is orange. All disk LEDs are blue, and disk activity LEDs are flashing. The Pegasus has been in this state for over a week. There was about 16TB of data on the volume, but I think the rebuild should have finished by now. I'm reluctant to just pull the A/C power from the Pegasus while there still seems to be disk activity.

Any advice? If I power cycle the drive, will the rebuild start over, or will all data be lost on the volume? If I restart the computer (hard re-boot) will it interupt the rebuild process and power to the Pegasus unit? Not sure how to proceed. Appreciate any insight. Thanks.

Connecting Pegasus 2 to a new Windows system

We are contemplating making a switch from Mac OS to a Windows based system in some of our edit suites. One of the final puzzles I need to solve, is the possibility of thunderbolt 2 and 3. We have several Promise Pegasus 2 R6 and R8 units already in possession (so this is thunderbolt 2), we love the product and obviously would like to continue using these, even on the Windows machines.

I've been researching thunderbolt motherboards and PCI-E cards and found some information about what I likely will need. We are planning on building X299 platforms with the following board which has a thunderbolt header:

https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/ROG-RAMPAGE-VI-EXTREME/

And we are planning on buying a PCI-E card like this, the first of which is very difficult to find though:

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboard-Accessory/ThunderboltEX_II/

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboard-Accessory/ThunderboltEX-3/

So to those that have some experience using Pegasus and thunderbolt with Windows or to those of Promise Technology, these are the questions I currently have:

- If I do happen to find the EX2 PCI-E card (thunderbolt 2 expansion card), will our Pegasus 2 units work directly on the card (if they are formatted correctly ofcourse)?

- If I can only buy the EX3 PCI-E card (thunderbolt 3 expansion card), can I use some type of adapter from TB2 to TB3 to make our Pegasus 2 work? Are there any adapters recommended?

- If we buy Pegasus 3 units in the future, can they work on the EX3 PCI-E card?

I'm hoping to find a good solution here!

Kind regards,

Utility crashes when trying to Save Service Report

Every time I attempt to Save Service Report the Promise Utility crashes.

I am using a Pegasus2 R4, Mac Pro 2013 "trashcan" with MacOS (10.13.4) and have latest Promise firmware (5.04.0000.61) and latest Promise Utility (4.02.0000.10). The R4 file system is Mac OS Extended (journaled). I even reinstalled the latest firmware and utility just to be sure. Have tried rebooting entire system and tried removing power to the R4.

The reason I am trying to save service report is because I have seen 10 instances of "Command times out on physical disk" in the past 2 months. It is rarely the same disk. Each of the 4 disks have generated at least 2 of these errors but, it is always one disk at a time. No SMART errors.

Hello,

Unmounted Pegasus Promise 2 R4 with unresponsive ORANGE power button, will now not turn on at all.

Having just returned from a brief vacation, I powered up my iMac and immediately installed a macOS update, to High Sierra 10.13.4.

On restarting iMac (Retina 5K, 4Ghz Intel Core17), Pegasus Promise 2 R4 failed to mount. The power button was illuminated ORANGE and all drives were solid blue but the unit would not power down, or respond in any way. I had not noticed if this was alreaday the case before installing the OS update but both Mac and Pegasus had been off during my absence.

I then installed Promise Utility 'R_Promise_Utility_402000010', allowed the extension under Security & Privacy and rebooted. The Pegasus unit would stiill not mount and the Promise Utility showed nothing, no window or cofiguration options.

At this point, I submitted the issue to Support Center and I am still awaiting response.

Elswhere in these user forums, I then found the following advice given to others experiencing the same problem:

- Shutdown the pegasus using the power button

- If it's not working unplug the power cable

- Mark and Remove all the drives from the unit

- Turn ON the unit without the drives

- Open Promise Utility

- Click subsystem information icon on the top of the window

- Click the lock symbol on the left bottom corner of the screen to unlock the utility

- Click on save service report button to save the subsystem report.

I attempted to follow this advice but having powered down the iMac, removed power cable and drives from the Pegasus unit, then rebooted the Mac, the unit would not turn on at all, either automatically, or by depressing the power button.

All connections have been checked, alternate thunderbolt ports tried at both ends, iMac rebooted several times, with and without drives replaced (always in the correct order) but the unit will no longer power up.

I am therefore unable either to use the Promise Utility or generate a service report, as suggested in the advice.

If the Pegasus unit itself is faulty but all drives are intact and in good working order, can I purchase a replacement 4 bay unit, insert the four drives and procede as normal?

All of my work, documents, records and data are on those 4 2TB drives and I am unable to work or function without access to them and am uncertain as to what to do next.

I have received no response to my Support Center query and given up on Promise telephone support after holding over 30 minutes for an engineer to become available.

I desperately need to get back to work. Any advice will be gratefully received.

My R8 won't mount. When I launch Utility, it gives me no options to do anything except look at general preferences, check for updates (I'm up to date), or quit. Disk 5 has a red light; the other 7 are all blue all the way down.

Pegasus2 R6 command times out on psychical disk, box unresponsive to shutdown

Since nov. 16 in 2017 I have experienced 5 instances of this, labelled "Minor". Unit gives of some irregular beeps then seems to continue, but unit is not found by promise utility and connection to my iMac 27"-5K seems lost. On rebooting iMac the (3 logical) drives are gone! Still unit shows blue led for drives. Yet the poverswitch is not blue! pressing the switch to power it down is nonresponsive. only way to get unit back is to remove powercord, wait and then replug it. Very inconvenient and not very promissing for future. I use drive for backup and timemachine. my Live data is at a separate Pegasus2 R4, which works ok.

the last 2 times this happened it was PD 2 that caused it. I am worried that the system has an internal controller error, since only removing the power will return it to 'working' condition.

Mediapatrol has not found any error on disks.

please advise if/how I can test further

kind regards
