Question about installing the cache battery

Hello! Initially, 1 controller, 1 cooling unit with a cache battery installed, and 1 cooling unit without a battery were installed in the e610f storage system. Later, a second controller was installed in an empty slot. The question is, is it necessary to install a battery in the cooling unit without a battery, or is it sufficient to have one battery in one of the cooling units?

Apologies as I submitted a post from July of last year and never followed up on it. As noted in the title, all drives in our J-Class expanson chassis (except the hot spare) show as Dead. I received an email response to my post requesting i submit a Service Log as an attachment to my reply. Well...a bit late but here's the service log.

reset old Vtrak E310S to factory defaults

Hi,

We have inherited an ancient (by computer standards) Vtrak E310S from a research group here. Before recycling it, we would like to reset it to the factory defaults but unfortunately we did not inherit the username/password to login to it. I can successfully connect to it via the RJ11 serial connection but the default username/password settings do not work. I have seen on this forum the following description of what to do (attached below) but my question is: we do not have any kind of support contract and am not interested in it for the box. We just want to reset things back to the factory before anything else is done with it. I have the model number, serial number and firmware version information. If anyone can offer any assistance with this, that would be most appreciated!

In order to reset the password to factory defaults, you need to flash the confuser image to the controller. Please create a websupport case at support.promise.com and follow the steps below then attach the serial logs to this case, so we can send you the confuser image for the current firmware version of the controller,

-Connect to the unit through the serial console and power on the unit, Here are the settings for the serial port:

Baud Rate: 115200
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1
Parity: None
Flow Control: None

- Once you logged into the CLI of the Vtrak via the hyper terminal, just re-boot the device and it would display the booting process

- Capture the serial logs generated (copy/paste it to notepad) & reply it to this email and do help us with the call back number and time to assist you with this issue.

We are looking for the below info in the boot sequence which lists the firmware version,

SAS drive recommendations E610f

I'm looking for 3 or 4TB SAS drives for use in the older E610f. The models on the approved list are getting hard to find. Does anyone have suggestions for currently available SAS drives that are compatible? Thanks.

RAID fans going overtime

Hello. VTrak E610f enclosure fans are going overtime but I don't see any reason why. No apparent errors on the web interface, except possibly a battery issue, but the battery issue is a longstanding thing that has never affected fan speed previously. Using the enclosure on a Linux OS that is running Autodesk Flame software. Any suggestions appreciated!

Customer having an Apple E610 Promise RAID with a "jbod" enclosure - one LUN of 4 lost.

We just need to get the LUN up again, if all data is lost - that's OK. It's an old XSAN we can wipe/reinitialize.

So if there is no way to restore the missing LUN/RAID config from the drives (?) now in unconfigured mode, that means "redoing" the config for those drives/that LUN.

I downloaded/Exported the "configscript" from the controller and it is missing the LUN3 config. It seemed easy to just add the LUN3 settings back in by copying and add one of the other LUN's configs in and then edit it to what it must have been and then Import the now complete "configscript" to the controller. In the "configscript" it says you must delete the old "configscript" in the controller so it seems it not just overwriting the old file when you do an Import.

Does any of you guys know how to do this?

Either recovering the "Unconfigured" drives (RAID5 degraded by one drive) LUN / RAID5 or just "update" the "configscript" and reboot?.

I connected an APC Smart-UPS 750 to the E610f using an APC serial cable but the UPS is not recognized. This is a newer model of UPS. Is it necessary to first choose network or serial connection in the E610f settings?

Or is a network connection the only option?

controller fail and other problrm

I have a lot of questions about the VTrak e610f (2 controllers) with the connected VTrak j610:
1. The biggest problem: - 1 controller issued an error - “The controller has been reset by a watchdog timer exception as it failed to respond to system requests”

On the first controller, a red status lamp
After that, the entire storage system stopped working. The exchange of data via 2 controllers (status lamp green) was stopped. All interfaces were no longer available, but they were ol-line, the local logging system did not track events
After the reboot, the controllers started and all the functions are working.
Before disconnecting the ping controller to the monitoring interface was from 50 to 500 ms, the external monitoring system signaled a periodic inaccessibility of the web menedgment site

2. Total defect blocks to the System Service Report
I have 2 hdd with Total defect blocks> 50 in System Service Report but in web menedgment status hdd - OK
This is normal?
Why hdd errors are not displayed in the web service.

3. How to turn the system on and off correctly?
a. What should I include first at startup?
b. What should I switch off first after shutting down?

4. Does this device have a snapshot function?

5. At the start of the storage system, some LDs are switched to 1 controller, although there are 2 controllers in the settings.

6. Problems with the management interface
An external monitoring system signals the inaccessibility of the control site every 30 minutes when packets are passed through 2 controllers and several times a day when packets are passed through one controller.
If the packets go through 1 controller then ping to the web menedgment

If packets go through 2 controllers then ping up to the web menedgment of 50-500 ms
How to fix?

Adding Drives to my E610f ...

Currently have 3 drives in RAID5 plus hot spare on each controller, each RAID is a separate LD. This is a dual Mac installation thru adapters, one to each LD.

I wish to add 2 additional drives to one side (more storage space). Purchasing 2 new Promise 1TB drives in sleds like currently installed.

I am unsure of the exact sequence to follow to accomplish this. I also thought of adding the current spare to the group and using a new drive as a spare. Is this feasibe? Can any of this be done "live"? The basic steps might be as follows? Please recommend Menu selections to make this happen or alternate steps:

1. Install new drive sleds.

2. Configure current spare to join RAID.

3. Add one new drive to RAID.

4. Make a new drive a hot spare.

What did I forget to ask?

I HAVE BOUGHT ONE VTRACK610F ON EBAY , NOW I WAS JUST LOOKING FOR AN EASY SOLUTION FOR MY DATACENTER .

BUT NOW ITS A PAIN. I AM A CISCO GUY NEVER TOUCHED THE STORAGE ARRAY BEFORE.

CONSOLE IS ALSO WEIRED AND THE SOFTWARE TO MANAGE I AM NOT ABLE TO FIND A SINGLE DOWNLOAD LINK .

Controller Firmware change from 10.x to 3.x?

i wand to upgrade my Vtrak E610fS to a dual controler system and got 2 used controllers for it (one for spare). But they have the 10.x Firmware. Is it possible to flash this Controllers with the current 3.x firmware?

Replacement Drive module not detected by Vtrak RAID.

Hi, I had a failed drive. I just tried replacing 2 drive and insert into the RAID system but it cannot be detected by the system. Any advise?

I hope to do the rebuild without restarting the RAID now as it is a production RAID.

The latest VTrak Ex10 compatibility list seems to be version 2.8.5 from Sep2014, which doesn't list any 15K RPM 900GB drives. Will such drives work with the 2.8 firmware? Anyone with experience about specific drives known to work, or specific drives to avoid?

How does one tell the difference between e610f for mac and a channel e610?

I'm in the secondary market for e610f storage units and/or controllers. Most e-cyclers don't know whether they have a Vtrak for Mac or a channel Vtrak e610f. Is there a serial number range or a distinct feature that is unique to either line?

I currently have serveral Vtrak for Mac controllers and would like to get away from the 2TB limitation and have firmware that's known to be compatible with the (mostly) current perfect path software for windows.

I have a 2009 Apple Xserve and a Vtrak E610F (non Mac edition) with dual controllers connected directly to the server (no switch). Is it possible for me to use the non-mac edition with Apple hardware or can it only be used with Windows and Linux servers?

Can I demote an E-Class chassis to a J-Class by replacing the controller modules? I have been told that the 610 series are end-of-life and no firmware updates will be released (last firmware update was 10/06/2009). We have several E-Class / J-Class systems but one of the E class chassis have come up with a firmware issue causing us to fail a client audit. I'd like to add the reconfigured box to our existing E-Class chassis that isn't failing the security audit. Any feedback would be appreciated, thank you.
